I don't think he has fully recovered from injury or at a minimum, is not in game shape. He looks tentative.

This.

Medicine has advanced a lot over time, but that still was a major injury that takes time. And it's just as difficult to mentally recover than it is to physically recover.

Agree. I’m assuming he’s got a high ankle sprain that’s giving him problems.

Maason is a Beast ! Some of you love to hid behind your pen but say it to his face! He is getting back and better every game and Hell Yeah the back ups are Bad arse and Depth at any position is good especially @ DL ! If anything We need a DLine Coach while either until Lindsey is back or replaced if he's done with FB. Heard Warren Sapp is joining Sanders , we need a Pump up the Volume guy to help, I have no clue how Kelly relates to the youngsters but Miles had them run through walls, O too oh yeah back to Maason Just watch and wait and he will destroy or be double and triple teamed so others will destroy the opposing qbs

I’m a Smith guy. He’s going to be a force when he gets his legs fully under him. He doesn’t quite have the power he used to

Yup I agree, especially about the lack of power compared to pre injury. He’ll get it back and hopefully this season.
He was pushing two guys backwards as a freshman so you know he can do it. He was also extremely quick as a freshman which will come back as well.

Yeah I am not anti Maason Smith. I saw him play well as a freshman. I am anti letting him work his way back at the detriment of the team when we have a backup that is playing well. I also don't think he shouldn't play at all, I just think Jefferson should be getting the starter reps and Smith should be getting the backup reps until he shows some flash.

Smith has played 45% of all defensive snaps.

Jefferson has played 32%.

About 10 more snaps per game. This isn’t an argument about who should play more, but it’s very clear there is a heavy rotation going on to keep everyone fresh. And despite perception, Maason smith is not dominating snaps.

Again, he needs a real D Line Coach.....all the talent in the world will still pale in comparison to leverage. Leverage is king

He just needs some reps. He was out for a while and it will take some time to get up to game speed.

Hopefully

I don't think anyone is saying he should not be playing at all. But I think it is clear at this point he shouldn't be playing significantly more snaps than Jefferson. If he's not yet in shape and still somewhat injured, that's fine. Rotate the DTs more. It's not like he's been great in the 1st half, then worn down in the 2nd. There are times in the 1st quarter he looks visibly tired and he is often the last guy off the ground. Usually waiting for a teammate to help him up.

I'd rather get his 95% on 60% of the snaps than 60% on 95% of the snaps. Let's face it. LSU can't make a midseason trade to improve the secondary personnel, and House seems committed to running a scheme apparently only a few DBs marginally understand enough to be on the field. So LSU is going to have to get more help from its pass rush. If that means greater rotation at the DL spot, then so be it. Because right now Smith is just an average SEC player.

Does that take into account Smith played 0% of the snaps in the FSU game?

Are his "snaps" in practice against our weak OL counting? Because our head coach says he is the most dominant player in the program as long as the real lights are not on.

also, Jordy mentioned that the Center he was going against is a RSSR and will be drafted! Dude is legit! Not someone you want to match up against

doesn't look like it. I will do the math and adjust

eta: Smith has played almost 62% of snaps in the games he's played

I know what I'm looking at, the coaches know what they're looking at, the kid does too.

I'm certain he wasn't looking forward to film on Sunday

The team is going to need more from that position moving forward if it's going to help the already lacking backfield

And more than anything, it's going to need ball control and keeping the D off the field as much as possible

I agree we need to run the ball more than we do, especially early in the game, but if the D give us a one on one opportunity to take the top off the defense and score quickly then we absolutely do that. You don't pass up scoring opportunities because you don't want your defense on the field to much.

Focused on him in a rewatch and then rewatched some of his freshmen snaps.

He almost never makes a move. He just locks in with the OL and allows himself to get blocked. The other DTs are fighting like hell to get through.

Not sure if that’s what he’s being coached to do, but a swim move or any type of move seems rare.

I know several guys who coach in the high school district he played in, including a few from Terrebonne. None of them were really impressed with Smith's ability. His size was problematic, and he played in a pretty weak district. He was never disruptive in games against Destrehan or Hahnville.

A coach at another Houma school told me Smith's senior year there was a Freshman on the Terrebonne d-line who teams would double instead of Smith. His last name was Bingham.
