Harry Rabenhorst
Dale Brown
John Brady
Will Wade

Crazy we haven’t had much success out of anyone else. John Brady is arguably better than Brown considering he did more with less and also inherited restrictions left by Brown.

Yeah that’s true. I grew up like most on here without much knowledge prior to Brown.

I knew Press was ahead of him, but found it interesting that we haven’t had much success outside of four coaches.

Op you’re clueless.
Brady did nothing. Had 4 kids from BR, one growing 6” from his freshman year to sophomore year and a senior from st Martinville not existed in 2006, he goes down as one of the worst coaches in lsu history.
Guy coaches here for 11 years, has 3 winning sec records, back when the sec sucked, and it was only b/c of local BR recruits he had those 3 winning seasons.

Look, I’m not some LSU basketball nut, I’m probably more of bandwagon fan to be honest. I do know Brady brought LSU to the final four, and others haven't done shite since, so is he really the worst? He did take over LSU under probation too.

2 sec championships
Sweet 16
Final four
7 of 11 winning seasons

Hard to say he’s the worst. I thought Jones was pretty bad.

Remind me again where Stro, Jabari, Lamont, Beshara and Torris went to HS in Baton Rouge.

I’m a big fan of Brady….that one year he was down to like 5 scholarship players and he kept them competitive game after game until about the last 5-7 minutes of the game when they were just worn down…that to me was even more impressive than a final four. It’s extremely hard to keep players fighting like he did when they know there is no chance

Yea, besides growing up and watching Shaq as a kid, I probably didn’t follow more basketball than under Brady.

Jones turned me off. He was too frustrating to watch so I lost interest.
Wade brought me back, and now it’s tough again. Thus why I call myself more of a basketball bandwagoner than some of these other posters.

I didn’t say Brady was the worst.
That honor goes to Trent Johnson, followed closely by Johnny Jones.

I just don’t give the coach much credit for the very few positives he had in his tenure. The only time his teams were good was when he had superior talent, in 2000 and 2006.
And it was only the first 3 years that he had a loss of scholarships to deal with. The 2000 season was the first year of no probation.
He wasnt capable of fielding a decent team most years and he was a notorious jackass that no one liked, but I will say he’s changed tremendously and admits how difficult he was to deal with, and he’s a great guy to interact with now.

Brown built the basketball program at LSU.
Unfortunately, the admin at LSU, gave a shat about basketball, and let him stay too long. Brown made LSU's Basketball brand national.
Brady gave Brown credit for making
his rebuild easier.
Hence, Wade's task was easier as well. To his credit he rebuilt it quicker, taking advantage of Brown and Brady's accomplishments.

If Brady was inept, how did he beat Duke on the way to the final four.
Brady had to overcome and clean up the mess left by Brown and Jones.

Wade had to overcome the mess left by Johnson and Jones.

Swift wasn’t from BR. I remember having fun during the Brady era regardless of who the team had. People give him credit for the final four year only because kids were from BR. Well the Swift and Dupree teams were solid too. And why should a coach’s legacy be lessened because he recruited well. People who hate Brady have a weird relationship with LSU. He inherited the worst team in history and restrictions to go with it and brought us to NCAA tournament several times.

Brady was the best we ever had only because Dale ruined the program.

1. Dale Brown

This one is easy. He ended his career 2nd among SEC coaches (behind Adolf Rupp) in wins. He led LSU to 13 NCAA Tournament appearances, 2 Final Fours, and 2 Elite 8 appearances. He also won the SEC 4 times. For a decade LSU basketball was every bit as popular as football. Maybe moreso. It is fair to say Brown probably underachieved with some of his teams. But the bottom line is LSU basketball was never better than when Brown was at his peak.

2. John Brady

Took over the program under very adverse circumstances at a time basically no one wanted the job. He won the SEC and took LSU to the Sweet 16 in year 3. Overall he won 2 SEC championships and led LSU to 4 NCAAT appearances, including a Final Four. The downfall of Brady was he was wildly inconsistent. During his tenure LSU was just as apt to be one of the worst teams in the league as they were one of the best.

3. Will Wade

(Ridiculously) one of the most polarizing coaches in LSU history. However, he was the most consistent winner in the three decades following Brown's regression and ultimate departure. Won the SEC in year 2 with LSU's best conference record since 1980. Led LSU to the NCAAT 3 straight times (would have be 4x but for the 2020 tournament being canceled). Put LSU under NCAA investigation in year 2.

4. Johnny Jones

Only 1 NCAAT appearance, but never had worse than a .500 SEC record until his final season. Like Brown, Jones seemingly wasted some talented teams. However, though frustrating at times, Jones's teams at least competed for the most part until his final season where Alleva kept him around too long and everyone knew before the season he was out the door. Not "good" by any means. But, overall, not terrible.

5. Trent Johnson

Started off with a bang by unexpectedly winning the SEC in his first season. He then drug the program into complete apathy immediately thereafter. 5 SEC wins (TOTAL) in the following 2 seasons en route to last place finishes. He had a losing (SEC) record in his final season of his tenure that, luckily, ended when he was able to convince TCU to allow him to parachute out of LSU before being fired.

No. Not at all. Brown took over a dead program in the 70s. He built it up in 4 years and spent the next 10-11 consistently playing meaningful basketball. Brady was frustratingly inconsistent. On 2 separate occasions he followed up his best seasons (2000, 2006) with last place finishes.

I have my doubts as to whether more than four people on tigerdroppings (prior to reading this post) knew that LSU had a legit national championship in basketball.
