quote:

New @LSUbaseball hitting coach Eddie Smith says he’s been emphasizing extra base hits and walks with his hitters. He’s analytically driven and follows the idea that higher OPS means more runs, and more runs means more wins.

quote:

Smith: “We try to have all of our preparation mirror that, and for us a lot of that is strike zone discipline, having an aggressive approach to specific pitches. Hopefully by being so aggressive to a specific pitch, it allows us to lay off the pitches that we're not looking for.”

Smith on Zack Mathis:
quote:

Eddie Smith:”Zack Mathis loves to hit. He absolutely likes hitting more than anything in the world. And he's down the cages every night like clockwork because he's just hitting and hitting and hitting.”

quote:

Smith on Mathis: “That passion he has for hitting is contagious. He's fearless, he's thankful for being at LSU. He came from junior college where, my experience as a coach and player at the junior college level, we didn't get batting gloves. We were lucky if we got a second hat.”

Analytics are winning the day in baseball.

This is a good thing.

I like it. I like it a lot.

All I’ve wanted recently is for LSU to show a modern approach at the plate. It seems like we’re getting there.

Getting on base is the number one goal. OBP is what it is all about. I’m amazed some staffs still don’t value this above all else. The more you get on base, the more you score. Pretty simple.

Happy we will at least have an approach in mind walking up to the plate this season.

Just hope when they need a bunt they can look comfortable doing it.

We’ve had an approach for about 6-7 years now, it was just the opposite of this one. Mainieri will have to show some patience for it to work.

But that’s not what it’s all about. OPS is what it’s all about. OBP means nothing if there is no one to bring those guys in.

Extra base hits wins ball games. Period. You can very seldom walk your way to win against quality competition and it’s very hard to string multiple basehits together. You have to hit the ball hard into the gaps with people on base.

Some oppo-field doubles would be a refreshing sight. Seems like this team never knows how to hit the ball the other way and put it in play.

The first week? I think you're giving the Rant too much credit. It will be in the first 3 innings of the first game.

OBP shows a slightly higher correlation coefficient than OPS with respect to runs scored in several studies I’ve seen. But it’s so close it’s almost negligible with the point being that these two statistics are much more reliable than traditional batting average in predicting total runs scored

How bout a little sign stealing? That’ll do wonders for the ole OPS

I would truly enjoy reading these studies. I love this shite.

What all hitting approaches in college boil down to “hit the fastball”.
