Watching the game against UMBC tonight....Emmitt Williams is seemingly our only “BIG GUY”. For the basketball gurus on The Rant, how does LSU compete at a high level in the SEC and beyond with limited big guys in the middle??? Appreciate your positive feedback!!!

If only there were an sec team recently without bigs that made it to the final four....

People get way to caught up in needing bigs. Playing big and rebounding has little to do with size, its an attitude. The best rebounders of all time werent 7 footers

We might not have a Bigby or Naz, but we are long. Everybody is pretty tall. And Watford is 6'9.

It worked ok for UVA last year. They only had one guy listed over 6’9” who played significant minutes. He averaged a whopping 3.7 ppg and 3.7 rpg.

So is that the exception to the norm or does prolific College Basketball teams not really need “big guys”?????

Auburn, another final 4 team, had exactly 1 guy on the team listed over 6’8” who played more than 2 mpg. He averaged 7 ppg and 4 rpg. Draw your own conclusions.

Yeah this is why I don't really care for the comparison to Auburn for this team.

we are rebounding just fine and getting second shots underneath as well. Auburn made it to the Final 4 last season with a team of similar stature.

This team will be firmly stuck in the middle of the pack. And any sophomores that leave are terribly misinformed.

What was your prediction for the team this point last season?
They aren't a "team" yet, but they are making progress.

I thought Cortese Cooper showed really well tonight. He’s got nice length and is more athletic than I thought. He had a really nice game, he was active he was good on offense and he rebounded well too.

How many times are people going to make the Auburn reference?

A team does not go to the final four without any size, just on "attitude". You have to actually excel at something that can replace what is lost in other areas where you are weak. And yes, rebounding is going to be a relative weakness for this team, because we have only three above average rebounders, and they can't be on the floor all the time. Days is always in foul trouble, as well.

Auburn excelled at shooting the basketball. LSU does not. LSU can score, just like they were able to score last year without being great at outside shooting. Can they score as much? I don't know, because last year's team made a living on second chances, because they were a dominant offensive rebounding team. I don't think this team is going to be as prolific in that area. So they will have to be very good defensively, and take much better care of the ball than they did against VCU.

I know everyone wants to blow sunshine all the time, but this team has a long way to go to be anywhere near last year's level. And frankly, I'm not upset about it, because I expected that. Alleva and FKA blew what had a chance to be a great recruiting class, and we lost three very important players. If this team makes the NCAA tourney, and wins 20 games or more, that'll be excellent, and will keep momentum going into next year with what should be a loaded roster.

Around this time last year LSU lost to Florida State, Oklahoma State, and Houston and people were questioning if Will Wade was actually a good coach.

This team doesn’t even have its best defender on the court yet and they are still learning how to play with each other. They will improve. Size is not everything in college basketball.

I had the same thoughts. I was pleasantly surprised.
He had a couple of blocks and a nice shot under the basket.

You can get away with a smaller lineup but there better be an emphasis, mindset and attitude to block out/establish position and play fundamental basketball. Charles Barkley is 6'5" and dominated the boards. Even Larry Bird could get 15 rebounds in a game because of good position/blocking out, instincts and fundamentals.
So to answer your question, yes, but certain things have to be stressed, put in place and executed for you to be successful.

I am starting to see improvement although it was UMBC. Wottford is starting to get more aggressive offensively and he is way ahead of naz as far as post moves. Barkley and rodman are 2 of the most prolific rebounders ever and weren't that tall. Key will be shooting and turnovers. Bishop also showed me a lot more last night. They seem to be getting more confident and aggressive which helps prevent turnovers. Looking forward to see how they do in the holiday tournament where the comp will be better. If manning and cooper who I saw for the first time can continue to develop we will be a competitive team with a shot at the tourney. Anyone expecting a repeat of last year is being unreasonable.

The plan-
Small quick line up.
Fast tempo.
Raining 3s
Long athletes causing TOs

Current format-
Raining bricks
Lots of running
Give the other team the ball a lot
