LSU hosts A&M the week after Aggies visit Athens.

Keep telling yourself the schedule doesn’t play a factor buddy.

That’s because I’m not at all what I’m saying, so you don’t have to pretend. But basing how good our 2019 defense will be on number of 5 stars is downright ignorant.

The 2019 team has a better QB than the 2011 team did and potentially a better defense. No reason that the success of 2011 can't be replicated.

first thing you ever said that I can get on board with. Going 12-1 and to the playoffs or NC game is very much with in the realm of possibility this season. If the injury bug stays away and the ball bounces our way it is very much possible. Just would need a little help from the football gods.

I agree. There are some people that think differently.

How many years in those 125 did LSU have a 5th year senior QB, 16 returning starters, and both the offensive and defensive coordinator returning?

how did we get in that situation? We need to get the program to the level of Bama Clemson and Ohio St that we have a realistic shot every year. That is what this staff is working on and doing a pretty good job at that in that we are even having this conversation in year 3 under coach Orgeron.

While the 2011 schedule was no cake walk I think the 2019 slate is slightly tougher on paper. That could flip either way.

Does everyone forget LSU beat 3 BCS bowl winners that year?? That Schedule was one of the toughest that someone ran the table on in my lifetime.

OOC included #3 Oregon and at #16 West Virginia. LSU played 9 games vs teams that were ranked at time they played. NINE.

Beat pac12 champ Oregon(who beat big10 champ Wisconsin in rose bowl),beat big east champ West Virginia(who beat acc champ Clemson in Orange Bowl),and beat eventual national champion Alabama in regular season. That regular season schedule might never be duplicated. Ever.

So I guess all those people who had Stingley rated as the best CB in the country didn't know what they were talking about?

My question is, with this added hindsight, knowing how the 2011 team did, why are posters getting upset with fans posting the bar so high?

Matt Moscona said on the radio yesterday that fans should be happy with 10-2, but I disagree. If this team has all the talent of the 2011 team, and I think they definitely do, then saying 10-2 is ok directly contradicts that.

First, I have not seen anyone complaining about the bar being high for this team. Not sure who you are seeing do this.

Second, Mascona is a click bait broadcaster who just says controversial shite to get people to call in his show and argue with him. He is such a douche that I could not figure out how he got the pregame radio gig for the Tigers.

Last, this team has the potential to go 12-0. They could go 8-4 too but they have the realistic potential to run the table including the game at Tuscaloosa. We just have to go week to week one game at a time.

The schedule favors LSU for a top ranking if they should be able to run the table this year. tOSU, OU, and even Bama will have strength of schedule problems as none of them have a premier OOC game. Clemson and UGA play aTm and ND respectively but those games are at home. LSU has to play Texas on the road...

10-2 with tbis schedule isn’t far fetched. Bama has 12 preseason all sec players. They are loaded and obviously have Tua and 3 1st round picks at wideout. But with Texas A&M AU UF and at State is always tough. Just gonna be easy to trip up in one of those games as someone said on a podcast.

hahaha. That's funny!

However it doesn't make any sense? Saying this team will be as good as 2011, but then saying they will also lose 2 regular season games, are mutually exclusive events.

So people either feel this team will not be as good as 2011, which I disagree with, or

they feel like losing two games in a season which LSU is top 5 and a schedule where 3 of your 4 toughest games are at home, is acceptable.

I am going to pretend like you are not suggesting that because one player on the 2011 defense had a legendary season, that makes the entire 2011 defense better than the entire 2019 defense.

That's not what he said so don't take it out of context. He was pointing out the flaw in your 5 stars are more talented point. I think it was a fair point.

Minter, Barrow, Simon, Mathieu, Claiborne, Brandon Taylor, Eric Reid, Mingo, Logan, Brockers, Montgomery

That defense was legit no matter what their star rankings were.

now imagine if this years is even better.

You really find it far fetched that Dave Aranda may be able to field a better defense than John Chavis?

I have been reading a lot of the chatter here that this team reminds a lot of people of the 2011 season. Prior to the 2011 season, no one was calling for LSU to go undefeated, but they did.

Reminds me of 2011 a lot. My default cautious optimism is barely being held in check because it reminds me so much of 2011 until Jordan got suspended (that was part of why people were less enthusiastic than now, despite what some rantards will tell you). Lee managed to do fantastic until he hit Bama again. I know a lot of folks thing Les was quick with the hook in that game but Lee looked like he was having flashbacks after pick #2, confidence shot.

And honestly, if 2011 never happens, I probably have less enthusiasm now.

depends on which 2. As much as I want to kick Texas between the horns, an early close loss (< 8 points) to a Texas team in Austin that has a good season and a close loss to Bama in Tuscaloosa (<10 points and we score at least 14) would be palatable and may give us a shot at the CFP depending on what others do.

If, on the other hand, we beat Texas but lose in another shutout to Bama and lose to A&M ending up 3rd in the west again, I'd be sick. Or worse than that, beat Bama but lose to Florida and A&M and have Bama win the west anyway, well, it would be like.

My response will be very unpopular but the answer to your question is, in much part, cultural. Whether due to superstition or protection from letdown, Louisiana in general and LSU fans in particular tend to not expect the best outcome and shoot for the next best expedition. 10-2 is a much more comfortable expectation for LSU fans than 12-0. The January game made even 9-3 a good starting expectation for the most wary LSU fans. I could go into examples and possible causes but I doubt anyone is interested (That’s the NOLA in me talking ) It is easier to see this when living outside the state for a longer period and understanding it’s multigenerational and ingrained in our culture.

I did, in fact, predict an undefeated season prior to the 2011 season and have witnesses. CSB, amirite?

This team could go undefeated, but I’m not sold on it. I think 1 loss, but am not sure whether it’ll be bama or someone else.

tRant posters are the worst...everybody wants so badly to be able to say “I told you so” that they’re convinced that being optimistic and excited is foolish. The whole “zero sum” zeitgeist is pervasive in sports and politics right now. Totally ridiculous, but what’re you gonna do?

I think when it’s all said and done, we will look back in January and say “yep, this defense was better than 2011.”
