LSU and Bama are like Affirmed and Alydar in the triple crown races in 1977 (I know I am showing my age). But for Affirmed-- Alydar would have set track records and won the triple crown....Unfortunately for Alydar, he was racing the same year that Affirmed was winning the triple crown.

I might even use the analogy of Secretariat and Sham. I believe Sham finished second in the first two races and seemed determined not to lose in the Belmont.
Only problem was that day Secretariat was a "tremendous machine" as the announcer put it, and he won by 31 lenghts and in world record time. Sham kept up with his blistering pace for a while, but was so burned out eventually he finished last.
But for Secretariat, Sham would have been great. And without LSU, Bama coulda been something.

Yes, because LSU is well-poised to play its first all around good game of the season (only counting real games against real competition), and Miles is unbeatable on turf when he has weeks to posture the Tigers on a big stage.

I rewrote the gumps cheer for when they play us to make them feel better. See below.

I'm pretty sure LSU had better field position the entire game. Mostly due to Bama missed FG's and LSU punting.
Meh - much like the rest of this discussion (where Gumps and national media types try to make this out to be all one-sided) - looks pretty even to me. Ya'll had a start on the 5, 4 and 11 - we had a 5 and a 1 - meh.
LINK
Ya'll had 4 drives start inside the 20, we had 5 - meh.

We lost to a team we were "supposed" to lose too.
So you admit LSU is better.

Bama went into the endzone on the pick 6
What do you mean...pics of your two FG's? There was no pick 6.

Les is a fox. Cunning is his nature!
Go back and check the recruiting ranking three years ago and see where 'Bama and LSU are situated in the recruiting rankings.
Les has been planning this trip to the Sugar Bowl for awhile.
Les and $aban have both recruited extremely well and they are the two best teams in the nation. The third best team is not close to these two teams.
Both teams are well coached and so very talented.
Les' cunning nature showed in the manner that he achieved an edge. DEPTH, SPEED on the corners (offense and defense), and SPECIAL TEAMS.
Alabama's challenge is to find ways to nullify these or LSU will win again.
I think one more advantage that LSU has is that 'Bama is focused on 'the Process' of individually doing the respective job and LSU focuses more on 'What I can do to help the Team'.
I am expecting a war and I expect LSU to win. No matter what else can be said about the game, the two best teams are there.

If you're looking for football enlightenment you have come to the right place.....
COACHING
LSU played the game similar to the way most great teams play when everything is on the line - good enough to win. We didn't need to do anything spectacular. We just wore Alabama out like we did everyone else late in the game.
OFFENSE
Our play calling was basic at best and Jefferson was just settling into the role of full-time QB. Actually it was the most snaps he had in a game this season to that point. Lee played horrible compared to his normal. Despite poor/average QB play we still won. LSU dominated the 2nd half and the running game was getting stronger and stronger as the game wore on.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Your so called "missed" field goals were 50/50 chances at best. Our future All-American place kicker was his usual spectacular self. Ditto with the punting. TM7 wasn't even our full-time punt returner yet we still dominated in all areas.
DEFENSE
Alabama threw everything at LSU but the kitchen sink in terms of play calling with trick plays, etc. Moving b/w the 30's seemed easy enough the 1st half but still nothing in red zone. 2nd half LSU's defense was suffocating - especially in the 4th qtr and overtime. We were getting stronger and Ala. was getting weaker.
Did I miss anything? Expect more of the same on Jan. 9th. A Tiger can't change its stripes but you can bleach the Tide and take the red out! You have been elightened. You won't need to ask again after Jan. 9th. Expect another 4th qtr of domination by LSU. Our 4th year reign of terror is near....

Bama fans think they had the better team in November, and they'll think they have the better team win or lose after January 9th.
It's who they are.
It's who they are.

decided by a FG in OT and like it or not, a lot of folks seem to think Bama had the better team that day
Two things, I'm sure were addressed in the seven pages I didn't read.
One it wasn't decided purely by field goals. LSU made short ones, Bama was kicking from 50 out.
Two, if Bama was the better team than why did they lose? (at home)?

So you're saying our coaching staff did a better job of recognizing that sometimes it's better to punt than to try a long shot FG? I guess there's a reason Coach Miles is 5-2 against the mighty Bama.
This is the absolute truth Bammers just cannot accept.
I don't have a big issue with this except its hard for any body to punt from the 32 yrd line or go for it on 4th an 13. Funny I did see Stoops punt from the 29 that very day. But OU got beat with a missed short FG the previous week.
I have several hard core Bama friends that agree Saban got out coached Nov5 but only because CLM did a great job. If LSU had covered TR on the screen passes his coaching would have been close to perfect, imo. Saban should have been working harder to get in FG range vs going for the TD. He tried to do too much against a great defense, imo. And why we weren't ready for JJ's option play is baffling. It was an effective play against us 2 yrs in a row so you'd think we would have been ready for it yr 3.
I do expect a similar game plan from both coaches but with major tweaks.

Losing yards in OT would be very hard to swallow if I was a Bama fan. You start at the 25 yard line. It's completely unacceptable to not get at least a FG in OT.

We lose again and there will be no denying LSU is the best team. We win and you guys will scream it was a 1-1 tie for NC. Some Bama fans will even agree with you but we'll have the crystal ball in our showcase and the NC for history's sake.
