Sorry if worded weirdly, just rewatching some of the game from Saturday and Southern Miss' first touchdown on the goal line had me kind of confused.

It was on the 1 and they handed the ball off and got stalled for no gain, runners momentum clearly stopped then the Southern Miss Oline comes in and starts pushing him from behind into the end zone. I could be out of line here but isn't that illegal??

You can push a pile not and ind runner.. As long as the runner is part of a pile, you can slam into him and push as well

Pretty sure it was. There was a big controversy about it happening in a USC-ND game in 2005. It was referred to as The Bush Push. They may have changed the rule, though.

Reason I ask is I remember way back when Reggie bush was at USC and they were playing notre dame and something similar to that happened and the media and fans were saying it was illegal

assisting the runner used to be a penalty but I think they recently changed the rule.
I'm not sure about pulling a runner, but it is now legal to push

Yes, you can push but not pull. They changed this rule a couple of years ago.

I've seen some teams line up big boys right behind the QB in short shortage and push on QB sneaks.

They clarified the rule a fews ago to allow the pushing of a pile.. Some believe you can push an ind runner but some refs interpret the rule as you cant

ETA: IT was partially ruled a safety issue as Offensive players werent allowed to help form a scrum as defensive players piled on to the runner.. The scrum is a safer situation as players are less likely to go to the ground leading to a whistle stoppage with forward progress stopped.

I thought that this was the case.

You are correct. This rule has changed. You can push, but can't pull. Basically the way I interpret it is you can't do anything to the runner that would be called as a hold. (Wrap up and carry, or pull his jersey)

It is legal, but as you said the runners progress was CLEARLY stopped so the whistle should have blown. I thought it was poor officiating to let it go on until the O line came up to start pushing the pile.

It appeared the runner's momentum was stopped. Shouldn't the ref have blown the whistle?
