That said, for those of you that upvoted, how about a hearty allahu akbar right after the prayers to the Christian deity?

Because that's not the tradition in Louisiana but you can experience that tradition in may parts of the Middle East.

Most don't, I do. Doesn't mean most religious people still don't confuse that, and you know full well if there was an Imam giving a "generic" prayer people here would lose their minds.

Honestly...whatever. I'll likely be banned for arguing the "wrong" side of this here, despite the fact I didn't start the thread. I'll leave with these two points:

- No one has ever stopped you or others from saying prayer the entire game if you want. You are free to do it as much as you'd like, out loud or in your head. Getting everyone involved seems wildly unnecessary and will ultimately end it it being removed again.

- Blaming Progs at every turn is silly. There are a handful of atheists on this forum that I'm well aware of who are conservatives. I'm more middle of the road now, thanks in large part to the notion that some on the right have that to be a "true" conservative means you have to love you some Jesus. But automatically labeling an atheist as a progressive does you no favors. just a suggestion...

It's not that you're wrong, it's just that you're calling a generic moment of gratitude a Christian prayer when it's not. If she had said "Dear God" or "Dear Jesus" beforehand, you'd have a leg to stand on.

It will be stopped and it has nothing to do with progressive conservative fight like people try to make it. It is a Constitutional issue.
LSU is a state agency. The Constitution prohibits the Federal government and states from establishing a religion.
This was done so that the government could not make its citizens pray in a certain way and force them to profess certain religious beliefs. (This is a deep seated issue and right in English law that took decades if not centuries to resolve. Think in terms of Olivier Cromwell, Puritans)
Now when you pray at a state sponsored (LSU) football game, to Jesus as God, you have established a religion that recognizes Jesus as God. (I am not debating whether He is or isn’t. I personally believe He is. Notice the capitalization when I refer to him.)
Now if you have some persons in Tiger Stadium are Jewish, they do not believe Jesus is god but a prophet.
If you say a prayer to Jesus as God, you are violating their Constitutional rights. The State has established a religion that says Jesus is God and forcing them to profess beliefs that is contrary to the Jewish beliefs.
A moment of silence does not violate the Constitutional provisions. You can pray to what ever God you want, the Trinity, Jesus, Yahweh, Alla, Buddah, Zeus, Thor, or just sit there thinking I wish the game would start.
Another non constitutional thought is people are paying their money to buy tickets. A lot of them may think it is BS and don’t want to pray or don’t think it is appropriate.
There are a lot of people who don’t believe in God, don’t believe in organized religion, or don’t give a damn about religion and praying. Just think about all the people that don’t go to church on Sunday.
If there was no prayer at the last home game, I am sure there won’t be one at the next. It is an easy lawsuit to win and LSU has to pay the damages and the attorneys.
One final thought on all this mandatory prayer or trying to make people pray. Isn’t this what the Shria law, the Talaban and ISIS try to do. The government makes you pray their way.

Would all you upvoters be ok with doing this before kickoff?

Requiring? How would that work and how is it a relevant hypothetical?

No, and nothing even close to that happened. In fact there was no mention of any deity at all.

I wish it hadn’t taken 4 pages for this post.

I don’t want prayer as a fundamental part of public expression in any way shape or form. After all, what happens when Christianity is no longer the doctrine of the masses and all of the sudden we are doing some Hindu or Islamic or church of Scientology prayer at a football game or in our kids school. Nope nope nope.

Totally agree. And they should lose their minds. That's not the tradition here. The tradition is predominately Christian. There are other locations where Muslim prayer is very accepted (actually required.. ).

Agree. But I'm not at the game to pray. I'm at the game to, well, watch a game.

It's not necessary it's just an extension of Louisiana culture, or any SEC school for that matter.

I was wrong to say prayer only hurt some "progs feelings" in my previous post but it sure is convenient on a message board.

This is what hurt the OPs feelings so badly

quote:

"Ladies and gentlemen we ask at this time you pause for a moment of reflection"

Voice of a young lady comes over the PA

quote:

We are grateful for this exciting day to experience Tiger football. We are grateful for our country, our state, our university and its spirit, tradition and core values. We appreciate the education and experience that inspires us to fulfill our university's purpose. Develop leaders and character and to serve the greater good. We hope for the protection of our players and safe travels for our visitors. Amen

Typical brainwashed idiot.

Research your religion's history. Research all religion history, you'll find they have ALL had their centuries of evil.

FYI, there was no religion established Saturday night in Tiger Stadium.

Not at all.

And Jesus/God/Allah were not mentioned once. The audience was allowed to make their own inference or not.

Good thing that did not occur.

We shouldn’t ban prayer or make it compulsory. Most often, prayer type speech is banned or censured at universities and many public venues.
