Second throw was mental first was a case where he hit the mound and was throwing up the hill and it screwed him up. It's common with pitchers you are throwing with basically everything you got downhill the entire game and suddenly you are hit a ball you turn to make a simple throw and go to lob it and you are throwing up the mound because of where you are field the ball. shite happens trust me none of you people feel worse for him mainly because you feel like you let your teammates down in that situation. He's the one that has worked his arse off for 2 years while we have all been sitting on the couch thinking about how good we were in high school. It's baseball when you get this far anybody can beat anybody on a given day

I was a pitcher in high school and had some scholly offers. Let me tell you the throw to first base is the hardest one for a pitcher to make. To keep from throwing it away, our coach use to have us take a few steps to first base and underhand it if we had time. Not sure why it was so frigging hard. My guess is you throw hard and at a given distance over and over and then have to make a quick short throw. Tough stuff.

I have seen it in Little League and suffered the same issue as a second baseman (very young). When I coached in Little League I realized it was all mental (of course). Anytime the pitcher caught a ball and could not underhand it (and he had this problem of course), I would have the first baseman set up a half step towards second base and give the pitcher a low target. I convinced the pitcher to mentally look at this just like a throw to the catcher. It worked well and I can remember only once the "extra" work led to the runner being safe.

"To error (sic) is human. Three is Steve Sax"

This pretty much ruined Chuck Knoblauchs career.

I remember Sax from my years in L.A. Just hope Poche doesn't develop this throwing phobia. If it looks like he's got a problem, have him practice this shite over and over during the offseason. We'll see.

Didn't the Yankees have a 2nd baseman who went through the same thing. I think they moved him the left field so they could keep him in the lineup.
FTR I don't think Poche has Steve Sax's Syndrome. He just had a brain fart, then got a little nervous. He will be fine.

it's called the YIPS. I had it in college playing 3rd base. if I had a routine ball hit to me, it was very difficult to make the throw to first. it's a weird deal. it's a mind game. however, if I had to dive to make a play and come up throwing, it was on the fricking money everytime.

chuck knoblock had it. arod had it. many many people have it. once you get the YIPS, you have to have some sort of mental mechanism to get out of it. for example......if a ball is hit to you and you think that you have to scratch your ear before throwing it to first, then that's you mechanism. it's very difficult to get out of this mind game.

golfers experience it all the time too.

Agree with this - then drill after drill under pressure until it's fixed.

Your take (the ear scratching) is very consistent w/pieces of the article. The sports psychologist quoted in the article called yips "misplaced focus" syndrome. Focusing on scratching your ear (or anything OTHER THAN throwing the ball to first base) would, per the article, cure the problem. Hopefully, Poche's situation is just that - a situation in which his normal, error making capability, as a human being, just happened to have have happened twice on back to back plays by pure coincidence, and isn't the result of a bonafied fully developed case of the yips.

Wish I would have known the ear scratching thing. Coaches back then thought the cure-all was yelling.

Dropped third strikes are still recorded as a SO.

Billy Wagner had 23 K's in a 7 inning game in college.

Ann out is an out regardless of how they are recorded. A 15 inning game has 15 outs--right? The defense can't be required to make 17 outs in 5 innings.
