if necessary, yes, he will be. Paul Mainieri's job isn't to cater to an assistant coach on the football team. If that was the case, he would have offered Moffit out of high school. Walker getting hurt just offered a unique situation for an additional walk-on. I'm sure Moffit and his father understand the business and the roster cuts that come with being on a college baseball team.

So you're basically saying that getting Dups and Watson back cost us Cabell?

No

Cabell could have been handed the starting job. He doesn't want to go to school.

He'll lower his number later in the summer or go to a JUCO next year and not take classes.

Yup

And keep him around the program in some capacity. Or maybe he can join the football team

Why would Cabell commit to LSU if he was content going the juco route anyways? Same with Mac Marshall?

Yes, but none of that would require him being released by LSU. There probably isn’t anything more to it than what you stated, but it’s weird to come out and say it now if it is as straight forward as that. It also wouldn’t explain why he dropped so far.

Leverage

If he commits to a smaller or less prestigious school then the person offering the contract can come in at a much lower number.

He committed when he was sophomore in high school, before his eventual route to the pros was all that evident. He didn't blow up until after he committed.

I know high school kids are normally known for being steadfast in their decision making, but sometimes things change over the course of 3 years.

I don’t care what anyone says. Slaughter started to turned it on the second half. Don’t care care about the batting average over all the 2 years. He’d be better next year. I agree with Project on his glove. He is a loss if he signs in my opinion.

Losing Cabell hurts if you think he’d out perform the current outfield, which should all be back.

Nolan Cain is a very very good recruiter. Glad he is on staff.

Micah Gibbs seemed to be pretty good the year before. I think we’d be ok with that.

We’re going to be very good IMO.

Could just be to add some finality to the situation.

Any other year I think Mainieri waits on him.

I think with the numbers crunch this summer either Cain or Mainieri did their post draft phone calls and Cabell was the only player that wouldn't tell them his intentions (at least to either enroll in school or what his number was).

Why would mainieri encourage slaughter to sign? He expecting someone to come in and produce more?

That's been the word on cabell for a while, you're right Adam. Cabell had no interest in coming to school. he will absolutely sign or go juco and try again next year

True. Maybe he’s doing us a solid so we aren’t glued to Brewer twitter feeds and recalculating their numbers every time they sign someone.

Siap, but Hess will remain starter

Bain was offered a draft spot but turned it down because he wanted this year to be his last baseball experience. That’s pretty shocking. Dude was pumping 94 at the end of the season.

I understand but why do a signing ceremony if you aren’t coming?

That's what I think happened. So they made the decision for him.

Every player does a signing ceremony, usually it's through the school or academy.

What if a player doesn't sign anywhere because they "know" they'll be a high draft pick and then it doesn't happen.

I guess he doesn't see a place for Slaughter as a starter next season with who is returning and the signees coming in. If that's the case, Slaughter needs to take his money now when he can rather than getting a worse offer next year he would have to take. We have a much bigger numbers crunch than we're used to to get down to 35 guys.
