True but given that they broke it down into distinct groups, too 4 getting a bye, next 4 getting a home game, last 4 just happy to be there, I think this is the best option to keep the season as relevant as possible.

I’m with you on this. My first thought was that 12 is way too many. But when you dig into the details it actually solves quite a bit IMO.

- 6 slots are reserved for the 6 highest-ranked conference champions. This means that the highest-ranked G5 champion will always get in so no more crying from the UCF’s of the world if/when they get stomped. It also means that a P5 champion is almost guaranteed to get in unless the conference is so dogshit that there are two G5 champs ahead of them - like the Pac 12 last year.

- The four first round byes are reserved for conference champions. So those conference championship games (and regular season games) will still be very meaningful. I’m thinking about scenarios where you have a #8-9 division champ vs. a top 5 division champ. The lower ranked team can actually clinch a higher seed and a bye by winning, whereas under the current setup they are just playing spoiler.

- With the first round being played at campus stadiums, it should bring back a little bit of the pageantry that’s been lost to the corporate bowls and still help keep the regular season relevant.

- Perhaps most importantly, it forces teams to play more games against high level competition to win a championship. Is it likely that a 12 seed will win out? No, not really. BUT a 12 team playoff absolutely reduces the chances that #1 or #2 will win every year, which hopefully makes the game less stale.

You almost want to be at 1 loss and #2 in the west. Avoid the conference championship, still make the playoffs, and get a first round game at home.

Except that you lose a first round bye. I’d rather win the conference and play one less game.

Also I don’t think that scenario (1 loss #2 in the SECw) happens all that often. I could be wrong, though.. haven’t checked.

There is already a ridiculously small number of quality Interconference games. There shouldn’t even be Major-conference CCGs if they do this.

Yeah that's not how it works. Bowls will be eliminated because they are useless and nobody gives a shite

Technically your playing the same amount of games... #2 in the division is skipping conference championship game but playing in the first round and #1 in division is playing conference championship game but having a bye for the first round

True, but it’s not the same number of elimination games.

If you win the division at 12-0 but lose the SECCG, you’re still in the playoff and still going to have a home game in the first round. So you’re in the exact same situation as the 11-1 #2 team in the division.

OTOH, if you win the SECCG you get a first round bye and have one less elimination game. And you get to add an SEC title to the books.

The only circumstance I can think of where you’re better off not going to the SECCG would be if you have an OOC loss that would cause you to potentially drop out of the top 8 seeds in the event of a loss in Atlanta.

False. Question: how has the four team playoff been bad for the sport ?

I like it more than the BCS system

Attendance is down. I believe championship game viewership is down. The number of teams who win is down. The competitive playoff games are few and far between as it is. The BCS crushed all of those things and rarely had a lackluster year. The CFP has had the blandest seasons in the past 20 years. It makes more money the same way TJ max makes more money over a higher quality boutique store. The product is just more diluted. The CFP has been unquestionably less fun and exciting than the BCS era.

Which is crazy considering how many people lobbied and wanted a playoff system for decades.

Love it for the sport. But my caveat is the first round and quarterfinals are home games for the higher ranked team.

The culture of college towns and the atmosphere of home games makes college football great. Distinct from the NFL
Imagine playoffs games in blizzards in the B10 or Texas coming into Tiger Stadium. Definitely beats a game in jerry world or hard rock stadium, imo.

Truly stupid. They can barely field a competitive 4-team playoff every few years.

Finally! Bet they didn't realize 3 teams would monopolize the four spots every year. With this, teams like Clemson and Oklahoma can't just coast through the schedules like they have. Also teams like Bama and Ohio St can go through a tougher gauntlet instead of the 1-2 times every 4 years LSU and Auburn are really competitive.

The best thing though is more teams getting a chance to make it to the big game. I'm ready for the chaos and the chance to play teams like Oregon, Penn St, Ohio St, or maybe USC.

ETA: I will say this though, I think 8 is better.

Watering down college football like they did with pro sports. Let's just give out participation trophies and be done with it.

How many college team sports don't have some form of playoffs? And by playoffs, I don't mean the shitty "playoff" we have had since 2014.

That's not watering down anything that's just people so stuck in the past that they find it inconceivable to change. However I have always thought 8 teams is the sweet spot. Twelve teams seems overdoing it.
