Our D linemen would wreck havoc. No more double teams for SHelvin, Logan or IKA.

I think this was in the works. What other reason would they be so excited about coming back? O convinced Shelvin, Logan and Farrel to comeback for a chance to dominate.

We really don't have the linemen for a 4-3 defense we have been recruiting for a 3-4.

I wish we would go back to smaller faster d-linemen with the way the offenses have evolved. Bama don't even run a power running game anymore and we would just outscore it anyway.

I remember when everyone was worried about going to the 3-4 bc they said we didn’t have a nose guard. Said we had been recruiting for a 4-3. Everything is cyclical.

I mean the D Line was pretty bad at first for a 3-4 scheme.

I don't like a true 4-3 in college unless you have a rare pass rushing beast at DE like clowney, tamba Hali, etc... Otherwise you just have one more fat guy on the field who can't catch rbs and QBs.

Of course players like Farrell are excited, the 4-3 would boost their profile and numbers. But guys like Shelvin and Ika won’t be as important and won’t see as much playing time. It’s a bad move and we shouldn’t do it.

I think this thread is full of people that don't understand the 3-4, and don't understand how it's better suited for spread offenses. Too many old school thinkers here.

Unless you run an undersized line in a 4-3, I believe there was a recent NFL game where they lined up 4 D-ends.

With the 3-4 you get run stopping in the middle and an extra speed guy on the edge.

Reading the first few comments, evidently my opinion is rare. But here it is.

It really doesn't matter, 4-3 or 3-4.

Defense, like offense, has to be multiple in this day and age. Hell, we ran a ton of 4-3 ish stuff this year including Monday night. Venables is another example. His changes from play to play depending on situation.

Nickel was practically our base.

Yes please switch to a 4-2-5 and let’s let our DL eat. If Chaisson comes back it would be especially nasty. He’s already big enough to play 4-3 DE in a pinch but let him gain 10lbs of muscle in the summer to show scouts he can thrive in either defense.

DE: Chaisson
DT: Shelvin
DT: Logan
DE: Farrell/Thomas (if he returns)
LB: Clark
LB: Stevens
CB: Stingley
FS: Harris
SS: Hampton
NB: Vincent
CB: Flott/Ricks

You still have package guys to rotate in like Brooks. I think Stevens makes an excellent Keon Alexander type LB in a 4-3.

Apparently I didn't read far enough down.

And with Guillory and Jackson being in the second rotation.

You need to watch more football.

With teams getting more and more to the spread and keeping the same personnel on the field, so defenses can't switch, having too many big boys on the field is going to kill you by the 2nd quarter.

A 3-4 is more versatile and puts more speed on the field. It's easier to disguise coverage, and you can blitz from anywhere on the field, with virtually any player. O will be making a huge mistake if he goes back to the 4-3.
