“Across their combined 13 innings of work in this series, Paul Skenes and Ty Floyd allowed only two runs on eight hits. They walked only two batters. They struck out a combined 23.

But in the other 12 innings of the series, LSU put 10 different pitchers on the mound. Those relievers combined to allow 22 runs on 25 hits. They walked 12. And they struck out 19.”

Yesterday we had 5 pitchers throw that couldn’t even complete a full inning.

Just throw strikes and let them hit it.

Losing the game Ty pitched 6 innings of 1 run baseball while striking out 10 and walking only 1 batter was more concerning to me than what transpired Sunday.

13 innings and 19 Ks is a big number.

Obviously our kids do not pitch to contact. They pitch to get strikeouts. We get a lot of those, but we walk a lot and we give up a lot of hits. Something is not working.

We can't achieve what we want if we do that though. It may beat MSU on a Sunday. But, that's it.

These guys need to be able to hit corners, and throw strikes with their secondary pitches. It's the only way they can get outs.

It's really Hail Mary time.

This sounds good in theory but then they throw meatballs and get rocked for home runs off the scoreboard. The bullpen pitchers seem to either throw balls right down the middle or WAY off the mark

Its not seems that way, that is the way it is. They get behind in the count and then hitters at the d1 level light them up. Those injuries to the pitching staff have finally caught up with LSU.

But, this looks like a confidence problem. It will be interesting to see if they can work it out.

Heck you could even add Coleman in there with his 2.2 IP, 1 ER, 3BB, 5Ks...on a 50 pitch count. I'm betting they stretch him to 60-65 next weekend. The SP was NOT a problem.
Bullpen pitching will make or break this team down the stretch. If you can't throw strikes and get outs at this level, even just once through the order, you should NOT be on the LSU roster. This is DIV I, SEC baseball.

I'm not sure on that...the last 15 or so pitches he threw his velo was way down. I just don't see getting more that 3-4 innings from Coleman this season in a game.

Well Miss St definitely hit it. Out of the park several times.

This series wasn't lost by walking in runs. This series was lost by the bullpen giving up 25 hits.

So, imo, it doesn't matter if they walk batters or throw strikes, these relief pitchers plain just suck.

You try to figure out how to make 18/19/20 year old men with little experience do what you need to do. There is going to be growing pains.

That game yesterday was ABSOLUTELY about free passes. You have guys that can’t throw strike and when they have to throw them they have to be over the middle because that is what happens when you can’t a first pitch strike. You don’t know baseball if you can’t understand that lead off walks probably score 60% of the time. It is definitely >50%.

What has happened is Wes Johnson has them nibbling and that why don’t have the command to nibble. Secondly, the strike zone has tightened to the point that team ERAs ACROSS THE SEC IS IN THE MID 5s! That is gorilla ball stats.

As Jay Johnson stated recently, ”this game about balls and strikes”. People on here focus on hitting WAY too much. .280 hitting teams with the ability to grind out ABs and steal bases and bunt do get to Omaha on a regular basis. The pitcher WILL ALWAYS have control of a game. That fact will never change.
