Help me understand why Jay made this move. I think it was the bottom of the 5th with 2 outs and no one on and Jay PH Pearson for Merrifield with Milazzo on deck. Pearson got HBP but Milazzo did not bring him in. Nippolt went to 2B and Pearson was burned.

We knew this part of the order would come back up to the plate at a later and likely more crucial time in the game. Sure enough Nippolt came up with a man on 1st and nobody out in the bottom of the 8th and failed to lay the bunt down and then struck out. Would've been obvious to PH Pearson there instead. What am I missing?

It was a weird decision.

It was the 6th. And Merrifield only started because they started a LH. I think they just wanted to get Nippolt in the game and they saw the opportunity for someone to hit that is better than both of those guys

I get that, but Merrifield is a serviceable 2B, probably better defensively than Dugas. I would like to have seen them pinch hit for him in later in the game as they knew that spot in the order was going to come up again.

Thru about 90 games under Jay Johnson. Its pretty clear that Merrfield is not a guy they want to see meaningful innings

They gave Merrifield a shot and just didn't deliver, I do think it's interesting he's gotten much less play than Nippolt considering Merrifield crushed it in the fall, but Merrifield hasn't done anything yet to claim that spot simply put even if it has been much less opportunity

Forgive me for wanting to discuss baseball strategy with the great baseball minds of the rant after a win. I forgot all we're supposed to do tonight is praise the team and bump all the melts from last night

It became a bad decision when Nippolt couldn't get the bunt down or move the runner over

Hal Hughes had better at bats than Nippolt.

Merrifield hit a rocket that the SS made a great on. Nippolt hasn’t done sqwat at the plate with more chances.

Nippolt is better defensively and neither do much at the plate. It was a good move

Are you wanting to have Nipolt take over for Dugas yet? Or how about sitting Milazzo for the rest of the season?
Just gauging your opinion right now so we don’t have that “weekly write-up”. You’re the Johnson “Poncho and Ree” equivalent.

I agree, but with Dugas down, I also don't see a whole lot of difference between he and Nippolt right now. We are also pretty damn spoiled offensively as our backup second baseman is the only position not hitting .300. Hell, even our "defensive" catcher is hitting .341

My only point was I would liked to have seen them hold off pinch hitting for Nippolt until later in the game.

I have been out on Nippolt the first time I saw him hit live and milazzo is hitting .187 in SEC games. And hasn’t been great defensively, either. Not sure what you are looking to hear

My point is that it shouldn't have been Nippolt vs Merrifield. I viewed it as we get 1 chance to let Pearson bat in place of Nippolt/Merrifield, so when do we want that AB to take place? Obviously would've been better to have it in the 8th but it all worked out anyway

Yea, agreed injuries have caused several glaring holes in this team offensively and defensively. We are a top five team any given day but there will be days we are extremely vulnerable.

Merrifield had a very loud out in his first AB, but I don’t think Nippolt is going to do anything at the plate that Merrifield can’t. We need Dugas back because it is such a huge swing for our lineup from having a top of the order guy in Dugas to a Hal Hughes-plus in those two.
