Pete Carroll Says LSU Poked Mike da Tiger with Cattle Prods

I realize that standard of care for animals like Mike were much different back in the day. But do you think the handlers were retards? At any point when dealing with a 700lb meat eating cat, does it sound like a good idea to intentionally make him angry?

There have never been 'handlers', just the driver of the truck and maybe one Vet school official walking along as the truck pulls Mike's cage around the field.
Cheerleaders may have put a mike up, but nothing could """"""""FIT"""""""" in between the outer shell with smaller holes, set far away from the actual cage inside the outer shell.
Even if someone did "bang" the cage, it would be the outer shell, not the cage itself.

And I think that inner shell was put in during the Mike IV reign. As it is now, it would be difficult to put anything dangerous or even alarming to a 700 pound cat into the cage now. Some people misinterpet the microphone being raised to catch his roars as some sort of stick in the cage.

My dad said when he was in school they'd use the mascot to scare the hell out of Mike or poke him with a stick. Never heard cattle prod.

Just for agruments sake. Lets say mike's cage had wide set bars. I'd like to see the brave soul that sticks his arm with a cattle prod in the cage with a full grown tiger.
Petey is a drama queen.

Mike's trailer had the mesh back in the early 70's......that's what the cheerleaders would hit to get him to roar.....

There were 2 surfaces anyway - the outer cage that had very small holes, and the inner cage that was too far inside the outer cage to fit anything into!!!!!!

In the late '70's I was ushering games with the Scouts. A group of us wound up down by the cage trailer before the game. One of the kids in our group started running his hand back and forth on the small holes making this irritating noise. Mike had enough and let out a roar. We all about crapped our pants and the section of fans near us laughed their asses off.

Point of this story is you can't put a hand, stick or prod through the cage AND it did not take much to make Mike roar.

Some of you are idiots. Pete implied it was intimidating. Its a compliment folks.
quote:

"That thing scared the pie out of our team," Carroll said. They were poking him with a cattle prod or something as we were walking by. It was horrible."
I am taking the it was horrible part to mean it was horrible for his team, especially given the first part of his statement.
