Haason Reddick was also a 5yr player who didn’t start until his 4th season.

Ironically two guys discussed in this thread Jones and Reddick each took four college seasons to flourish.

Talent gets a guy so far, but he has to mature and learn too.

Sure there are exceptions, but a lot of top players don’t start year one or even year two.

Somebody told me Perkins asked to be moved inside to help his draft stock. Not sure if true or not.

I don’t know if he asked or what but I definitely remember BK saying they wanted him to learn the inside position because it would help him at the next level. It sucks that Maason was out for FSU because that may have helped Perk. I’m glad to see Perk move around though.

Let's be clear, I'm not endorsing every way Rhule chose to utilize Reddick. We know his judgment is dubious (see his choice for QB at NU this year). But HR was playing in 2013 and 2014.

Probably why it is good to try that out in a game vs Grambling instead of a top 10 national televised game!!! Or better yet, have a game before the P5 game

Why not put him in the position he will excel at most in the college game and let the nfl figure out how to use him?

You’re assuming that developing Perkins at MLB only helps his NFL prospects. Maybe there’s some upside for LSU if a player with his athletic ability can pick up the MLB position?

I mean ultimately that’s the rub - it would be great over the long term if we could mold him into a dominant middle linebacker, but it’s really hard to do that without actually playing him at the position. This is especially true for a guy who they want to move around a lot, make offenses account for him, etc. since that requires more focus in practice than playing in one spot or as a situational OLB.

So your options are either take the lumps with him inside now or potentially never get a chance to make that move. It’s a catch-22 and I think it’s a little silly to be up in arms about Kelly/House trying to play the long game.

That's his second year with Temple. He played at a similar weight to HP in college. Of course, the AAC is a much different level of football. You generally won't find players that size playing "DE" in the SEC. But it's a similar edge rusher role.

That year he didn’t play in the first three games, he broke into a starters role late in the year and started one game.

His third season he started two games late in the year only to get injured and miss the last two games.

See the last post.
This is not an endorsement of everything that happened with Temple.
People have been misjudging Reddick for years, going back to HS.
I've spelled out the comparison.

Reddick started three games in his first three seasons at Temple. Perkins has started 10 games already.

Both Ruhle and Kelley moved these guys around trying to fit them in the defense.

Looking at the progress made by Reddick, Perkins is way ahead of him, but they all have growing pains.

Reddick became a beast. Your HS rating doesn’t determine your worth. No one knows for sure what the future holds.

Still an idiotic decision to move him to the middle. Needs to be asked who was behind that. Kelly or House

eh was 225 his 4th year and wasn’t as effective as he was at 230 his senior year.

Perkins is roughly the same size as Grant Delpit in his junior year right now.

6’2 215-220 and runs a 4.49 roughly

Reddick weighted in at 237 at the combine. he basically spent 5 years at Temple billing up to get to 230

if Perkins was 237

The question is why Perkins isn't 237

EVEN IF he was playing off ball LB, he should be at least 230. Did he come to LSU sub-200 or something? I thought he played last year around 210 or so. Putting on even 15 lbs in an offseason shouldn't have been THAT difficult. I think he's reported around 210 again, so what the hell is our S/D doing with him?

They are not creative coaches. They have systems and they don't want to modify the systems to maximize players.

I'm still confused why he's playing OBLB b/c (1) if size is an issue, it's still an issue there and (2) he's clearly not ready. Training him at OBLB how they want him to play there should have him backing up/developing to hopefully start next year.

I fear that they've wasted crucial development time (both in terms of body and skill) that may thwart development anywhere moving forward.

Is this some new position? I’m genuinely asking I’ve never seen this term.

Wasted crucial time developing what? His pass rush skills? Those are great and will always be great. They are trying to teach him to be a complete linebacker. That will never happen by him just lining up on the edge and rushing every time. They know they have that if all else fails.
