Dearest Ranters:
Governors can propose changes to taxes and sign them into law, but only the legislature can actually write laws that affect tax rates. Also, both the House and Senate are Republican-controlled.
This year's deficit will be >$850 million and next year's will be $2 billion.
Clearly, the LSU football mention was an attempt to relate the budgetary crisis in terms to which Louisianians can relate.
The point is: things are not good.

Totally not needed. Driving home tonight, I was listening to 870am and the man talking about this had smart non-hurtful cuts in his plan. I DO NOT remember his name, I missed it,but he was good. I'll look in the Advocate tomorrow to see if his cuts plan is in it. It was very smart with no cuts to LSU football.

LSU football is self sustaining BUT the student athletes often need the TOPS as a bridge between scholarship from athletic dept and remainder of expenses. At least that's what I read but darn if I can find it now. So YES maybe athletes would have to leave?? IDK.

So let me see if I follow this: our state budget is a smoking crater the likes of which we've never seen following 8 years of Republicans controlling all aspects of state government

By an overtly partisan group run by a guy who made his bones as an aide to Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy and whose closest association is possibly the sleaziest and most dishonest person in DC, David Brock of Media Matters. Just saying.
Regardless,water under the bridge and all that, the people of Louisiana are getting precisely the hysterical leadership they deserve for electing this fraud. I told everybody who would listen that within 6 months of taking office, this Governor would exploit LSU to get his tax increases. I was just off on the exact date.
