If you're using something I posted 9 years ago as proof that you're right about something now, then I was obviously wrong back then...

Wooo, this thread. I am a Hampton fan but does he know how poor the numbers are from the transfer portal relative to actual matching or improving their situation at a new institution, much less receiving an offer? How is he going to replace a full ride with the 11.7 limit? Maybe Vandy works their non-sports gratuities? Seriously, O needs to reel him in and MO stays on the BB team. Have no idea what the Hamptons' financial scenario is but passing on 1.8M was foolish, especially if baseball was most important to Mo.

I wonder how many high school draft prospects also pitched for their high school team? I have to imagine it’s quite a few.

most of them probably. Hell, I was no draft prospect by any stretch of the imagination and pitched some in high school when other guys were on short rest, in blowouts, etc

Maybe I’m crazy, but I would have just said “if you want to concentrate on baseball only, I’ll do everything I can as a head coach to help you achieve your goal”. I don’t get applauding him for “honesty”. How does he know a player isn’t going to work his arse off outside of practice and pass up one of the starters during the season. I’m sorry but I don’t agree with CPM and all you guys on this one.

You consistently outdo your own stupidity. It’s actually impressive in a sad way.

We prefer our coaches lie as often as possible and keep them boys on the bench.

Did he tell him he wouldn’t pass them up? Or did he tell him he was behind the others?

Do you think Hampton should have been rewarded and moved to the front just because he was allegedly giving up football?

Right, coaches shouldn’t encourage players to keep improving rather than telling them they are going have a hard time because they are so far behind everyone else. Especially when said player turned down 1.8 million so that they could help you win. You are spot on.

If we’re going to keep on with this trope, he turned down the potential of signing for that amount by telling teams he was intent to go to LSU and play football and baseball. He didn’t turn down $1.8mil just to go play college baseball.

frick no. But why discourage a kid that gave up millions to come play for you? Just tell him to keep working his arse off and good things can happen. Damn why is that so hard?

Sounds like that’s what he told him

He didn’t tell him to quit. He said he was behind other guys and it may take awhile for him to get where he wanted to be. You think the one blurb in the news was the entire conversation he had with Hampton?

CPM doesn't baby the players. I know all you travel ball dads/coaches think the players need to be babied. But they benefit from the truth.

The conversation between CPM and Hampton happened in December. It's now March, which means Hampton had all spring practice (assuming he participated in spring practice) and four weeks of season. I'm guessing Hampton felt like he wasn't close to closing the gap. So he's going to try something else.

CPM never said it would be impossible to work hard and pass players. He game an assessment of where the kid was before the season began. Hampton is the one who made this decision now, instead of seeing the season through.

Maybe the kid was working his arse off. He went 2/4 with three runs and a walk , but most likely grew frustrated as he watched guys hitting under .200 or with 3/1 SO ratios continue to get ABs over him.

Honesty is not the same as discouragement. From what has been reported, I don't think CPM discouraged Hampton.

CPM probably felt as a pure baseball player it would be hard to pass the other guys.

Look... lots of "first round potential" guys take years to figure out college/MiLB baseball. Some never do.
