Of course they aren’t profitable.
I’m not mad if they are getting money. Who do you have beef with? All of this is free choice

Of course they aren’t profitable.
So how should a business feel when they are loosing 100s of thousands on an employee?

You want to do real world then 99% of college athletes get zero scholarships, pay their own way everywhere, while a select few get paid a shite ton
That would be the “real world example”
I don’t give a shite if they get paid, but the NCAA is a private establishment. They should have been allowed to set their own rules on what is required of their member. The ncaa was not given “free choice”
The ncaa should be allowed to make their rules and the athlete should be feee to go elsewhere. Thats actually “free choice”

Who do you have beef with in the situation? It’s unclear
I don’t care if a business willingly compensates someone & losses money. Lmao

The ncaa should be able to have their rules, and if the players want to get paid or the schools don’t like the rules they go elsewhere. That’s free choice

Players like Joe Burrow made far more $$ for their university than what their scholarship was worth
And how many players make “millions” for their university?
quote:
The folks trashing kids for NIL never seem to mention the millions upon millions that high level coaches and AD have been making for decades
That sucks too…BUT at some point it’s adults vs kids. Should HS athletes get a percentage of the gate at football games? What about parents that only go because their kid is in band? Maybe band members need to get some money too.

I know exactly what goes into it. It is 100x better than any “job” out there, since you all love to throw the word around. Nothing like getting an all expense paid plus a salary for playing a game.
Holy shite, you think just because athletes have a more enjoyable job than you, that they shouldn't be paid. It's incredible.

Legitimate question, do y'all believe that players should not be able to profit off of themselves just because they play sports?
Posted on 12/7/24 at 10:34 am to lsupride87
The system is what triggers most people but they do not know how to communicate it.

Obviously, hundreds of thousands of student athletes found enough value in it to voluntarily sign up for it.
So, again, your original premise is kind of moot.
Of course there is value in it. They are also open to make money now through NIL, and the same people you are speaking about have no market in that regard. Compared to athletes that have the talent to possibly play football professionally

Imo people are just being stubborn and hate the change of the game. They dig in their heels and try to debate as much as they can but that’s the simple truth.

So if a player has a successful YouTube channel you think the NCAA should be able to ban him from making any money off of that?

I feel like it’s the talking idiot heads on ESPN that spoke all this NIL shite into existence and teams leaving conferences. Why was a good thing ruined or needed to be changed?
With the utmost sincerity I ask if you realize ESPN did not start this? It was the United States Supreme Court who ruled against the NCAA in their efforts to limit education-related compensation for student-athletes. The USSC said the NCAA violated antitrust laws.

That's nothing compared to what the athletes are making for the school.
I keep seeing this. How do you determine who makes what? What value does a 3rd string QB add to the program?
Sure, Burrow made LSU money, but how do quantify it? How much money does LSU get for advancing to 3 postseason games and winning? This includes merch sales, tickets, TV revenue. What is an acceptable amount for the university to take?
Whatever the players profit is, how do you determine what amount goes to what player? This is much more complex than “these guys make millions.”

why do you care if the school isn’t paying them? it comes from private donors/companies.

Then I hope you agree that your original statement on page 1 doesn't really make sense.
I'm not arguing whether they should or shouldn't be able to make NIL money. I'm arguing that your comparison to a regular profession is not a good comparison.

Playing football and Taking PE classes isn’t work
it is a full time job that is taxing on your body and mental health and requires a very heavy and regulated schedule. It is more difficult that many jobs. Live that life and tell me it’s not work. Regardless, folks should be able to capitalize on their worth.

Athletes should be able to make money off of their likeness. NIL in theory is fine. Pay for pay makes it pro sports.
Why stop at college athletes? In Texas, a state championship football game can draw 40,000. Where’s the money for those players? Again, some people go to the game JUST because their kid is in the band or cheerleading. Give those kids money.
Are we going to give some 12 year old gymnast money because tickets were sold for $3 at her gymnastics meet?
After all, it’s capitalism.

Does everyone make the same amount of money where you work?
