OT Film Room: Breaking down the LSU Offensive Line

Of all the position groups, none performed quite as poorly as LSU's offensive line. It was a bad day for coach Jeff Grimes' unit. Even his most veteran linemen - LG Will Clapp and C Ethan Pocic - had their Blips. But the real struggles came on the outside, at the two tackle positions held, mostly, by first-year starters in RT Toby Weathersby and LT K.J. Malone. - Ross Dellenger, The Advocate
Let's look at Malone on a successful underneath throw by Harris. This was pretty much the story of the day for Malone; he was consistently beaten on the edge. Malone appears to be more suited for the guard position. What do you think about his footwork on this play?
Here is another look at Malone on a successful pass play. He doesn't get beat on this play, but that is because he has no idea what his assignment is and just floated in non-man's land.
Next we see Clapp on a missed assignment. He has no idea who to block.
This next clip is about the worst display of blocking by offensive linemen that I have ever seen. What really makes this bad, is that it was a perfect play call, at the right time in the game, with the ball in LF7's hands, and three blockers out front vs one defender. Pocic and Clapp completely whiff on the block and get beat. And what the hell is Boutte doing; he's running wrong way in a state of complete confusion. The play goes for big passing yardage if one of those three does his job - block.
Watch Malone No. 63; just absolutely beat by a simple move.

Credit to Ross Dellenger and The Advocate on the following analysis - ( The Advocate Film Room):
UW LB Jack Cichy races unblocked into the backfield for a significant sack on QB Brandon Harris, forcing the Tigers into a third-and-long. Clapp and Malone (yellow circles) failed to recognize their assignments, sliding down a gap would have picked up the blitz.
LSU's final offensive play of the game unfolded from Wisconsin's 35-yard line on first-and-15 with about 1 minute left on the clock. Harris, under immediate pressure, threw an interception.
First off, TE Colin Jeter (yellow circle) heads out for a pass. That leaves three offensive linemen to block three Wisconsin defenders. We've numbered the matchups: K.J. Malone vs. CB Derrick Tindal (1 vs. 1), Will Clapp vs. OLB Vince Biegel (2 vs. 2) and C Ethan Pocic vs. DE Chikwe Obasih (3 vs. 3). The issue: Tindal creeps in at the last minute coming on a corner blitz. Malone shifts from covering Biegel to covering Tindal, but Clapp doesn't recognize that, and he takes Obasih along with Pocic. It leaves Biegel free.
Credit to slackster for this one:
As you can see, TEs Jeter (81) and Moreau (84) just close their eyes and hope to run into someone. Had they actually blocked the UW LB, LSU would have easily converted the 4th and 1.
Malone (63) gets beat again right off the line; LF7 comes over to pick up his block, but Malone doesn't know his assignment and does nothing to protect the QB. Harris panics, loses his footwork, and misses and wide open Dupre.

Please count the number of times oline man are standing around and never actually even attempt to block anyone. It has to be dozens of times.

Worst display by any unit by way, way far. And it isn't like there weren't others vying for the title.

Knew exactly what play you were talking about after reading just this. 2nd worst I've ever seen. The two Florida O lineman blocking each other will always be tops for me

That doesn't even show the last play where he threw the INT.
But don't forget, this is Harris' fault, just ask the Rant.

Just like BYU and Oregon fans warned us re: Crowton, I'm pretty sure you csn find several Auburn fans telling us how shite Grimes is

It was the worst OL performance I've ever seen at LSU I think.
Including Alabama last year. That game they just got out-manned physically. This game they were just lost and confused. So embarrassing.
The more I watch, the more I realize its not on Brandon Harris except for that last pass.

I saw Boutee aimlessly looking around at least half a dozen times blocking no one.
Like my high coach used to say "boy I don't give a flying frick who u thought u were supposed to block but by damn you better block someone. U see boy, you are a offensive lineman which means u have to block someone every single play, sometimes two people. There are only 5 of you, we don't have plays where u get to do nothing. If u wanted that u should have tried out for reciever or something."
And he is correct, a oline should at least attempt to block someone every damn play

Yeah, they weren't too upset to see him go. He apparently can't evaluate what it takes to play tackle. We've signed 12 guards since he's been here and no one that can play on the edge. But hey, he recruited the shite out of those guards.

Actually in that first gif the blocking by the tackles don't seem too horrendous. BH could step up into the pocket.
I dunno. They're bad. This offense is hopelessly bad. Just everything. So bad.

When I go back and breakdown the film and just focus on the OL play, I kind of get the sense that Harris played pretty well considering that there was at least one lineman not blocking anyone on almost every single play.

Take another look at Malone's footwork in that first gif and let me know if anything other than the word "horrendous" comes to mind.

Can we add some analysis of Jeter's frickery to this thread? He was absolutely horrible all game.
