Few of you will remember this, but in the 1970 opener a ranked LSU team lost a heartbreaker when QB Lex James completed a long pass to Hugh McElroy for a TD in the last minute of the game to stun the Tiger faithful in Tiger Stadium.20-18. I will never forget that moment.............

Archie Manning of course, but also Emmitt Smith. He was unstoppable in each of his four seasons vs the Tigers

Shaun Alexander just scored another TD

This is the correct answer. I was a kid in Tiger Stadium all hyped up that we could beat Bama at home for the first time in while.

A simple stretch play to the left side of the line turned into 70-80 yard TD, with Alexander crossing the goal line in the south end zone right in front of my view. Did that on repeat about half a dozen more times.

John Bond played on some really bad Moo State teams, but they beat the socks off of LSU each time

Philip Lutzenkirchen. The guy ALWAYS seemed to bail Auburn out and keep a drive going or come down with a TD when it looked like they were stalling out and LSU was gonna get a much needed stop.

Archie Manning in 68 and especially 69. The 69 team was Mac's championship team, and if we had won in Jackson Texas could not have avoided playing LSU. LSU would have beaten Texas. Even though LSU had an gentleman's agreement to play #1 Texas in the Cotton Bowl, the Longhorns immediately agreed to play Notre Dame after the LSU loss to Ole MIss.

John Bond may be more remembered in Baton Rouge than he is in Starkevile.

KJ fricking Costello, it was a rough time.

That wasn't a fair assessment of either team's ability. Costello was a pro-style quarterback from Stanford brought in to run Leach's air raid in this first season at MSU.

LSU DC made the mistake of trying to run man against an air raid offense that, while in its first game ever, was being run by a 5th senior quarterback, junior and senior wide receivers, and a senior running back who was arguably the best receiving back in the SEC.

Costello fell apart as soon as SEC defenses started running 8-man zone. If Missouri and Arkansas could do it, LSU could have too. MSU trotted out true freshman Will Rogers who ran the air raid in high school for the back half of the season after that.

Emmit Smith, everybody in the stadium knew he was running right up the middle every play, and no one could stop him.

Harvey Williams was just the opposite for LSU. Gameplan: Harvey left, Harvey right, Harvey up the middle, PUNT!

Archie Manning in 1968. He was a sophomore and came into Tiger Stadium like he was a senior. Led them on a game winning drive late in the game. On the last drive they had a 3rd and 18, which back then was tough to get because they didn’t throw nearly as often. If I remember right the pass went right through Craig Burns hands for the first down. I can still see Hindman backing into the south end zone for the game winner. Gut wrencher.
