Ole Miss claims 3 National Championships...

I didn't realize how weak all three were, but after seeing some posts about it on here, felt the need to go deeper and just put it out there. Should I post this on the SEC rant too?
First off, OM has never finished a season ranked #1 in either the AP or Coaches Poll.
Now to each season:
1959: 10-1, finished #2 in both polls. We all know about this season, Halloween night forever haunts OM, yet a natty still claimed by OM. They beat three ranked teams (one being LSU in the Sugar Bowl). AP/Coaches champ was Syracuse.
1960: 10-0-1, finished #2AP and #2Coaches. Most LSU fans know, but maybe not the younger generation. The tie was to LSU in Oxford, so again, we deny them a natty. They beat two ranked teams. AP/Coaches champ was Minnesota.
1962: 10-0, yet finished #3 in both polls. Beat two ranked teams. The only undefeated and untied season in Ole Miss history. AP/Coaches champ was USC.

They got every right to claim '60 after Minnesota getting their butt beat in the bowl game.

They also claim a 2003 SEC West Title.

Not really melting, just wanting to see how the various arguments for or against stacked up.
Tried to keep it to just the facts.

Correct me if I am wrong here...werent titles awarded before the bowl games until the 1970s? Teams did not take these games as seriously as they do now.

I think you're right.
Bowls were considered exhibition style games. That being said, it seemed like one of the big four for decades was able to get 1/2 a lot of seasons.

How does this work? Does Minnesota claim a NC for that year too?

Yes they received the AP, Ole Miss the FWAA which was very legit at that time.

I have no issue with any of those claims.

Very few current Ole Miss fans claim or care about those titles except for guys who are pushing 80 at this point. That 1962 "Ghosts of Mississippi" team was legit but got shafted for political and cultural reasons. But again, if you walked through the Grove yesterday less than 10% of the people there know any of that history. Actually, most purported Ole Miss fans don't know anything about the current team either.

Why do you care What ole piss claims or even thinks?

Does anyone really care about these phantom titles?
Posted on 10/25/21 at 6:31 am to wesman21
Not a good look but I would note that was back in the days when sports writers and coaches decided who were the National Champs. Most writers were on the west or east coasts and regularly screwed over southern teams.

Thats like getting a trophy from your parents after a season

Are theirs more or less legitimate than Texas A&M's? I would guess more but still curious

Only 1960 is legit. Ole Miss has two national titles all together. 1960 football and 2021 Women’s golf
