Would any of you be OK hiring a football or basketball coach who presented a resume like this?

Well, this is what is now running the LSU Tiger Band....compliments of Damon Talley.
Thanks Damon. Under your leadership, we have seen the brass numbers drop, overall numbers below 325, musicianship of the band decline, one of the best bands in the SEC to one of the worst, can't hear the band anymore at the games, etc. We now have "The Spelling Band from Tigerland" and their kindergarten drawings at halftime.

The "golden" days of the TGBFTL are over. There's been a noticeable drop off in sound and quality in recent years and it will continue to get worse. You can point fingers at Damon Talley if you like, and he does deserve some of the blame, but the current Tiger Band leadership was put in place by School of Music dean Todd Queen and our old friend F*king Alexander.

I agree 100% that Kelvin Jones has no business leading TGBFTL, but did you really think LSU would conduct a legitimate search for a quality director? Of course they didn't. They took the easy, no mess route and promoted from within. It's such a shame and a waste. Yet another proud LSU tradition will be left to wither and die. I'll be very surprised if Tiger Band has 325 members this fall.

My seats sit East side towards the North end zone. The band makes the North end zone even more intimidating for opposing offenses trying to run a play.

If you want to follow a quiet sport, go pull for the golf team.

It is constant and to be honest it is embarassing. It sounds like the band's of SWAC.

I don't know of any SWAC bands that play two notes for 15 minutes straight.

Yeah chief it’s not about wanting a quiet game...
Playing the same two notes over and over again is beneath the pageantry I expect from this great university.

Promoting Kelvin Jones is such BS but the school of music doesn’t give a shite about Tiger Band unless they can suck more money out of it. He’s an OK director but nowhere near as good as what LSU could get if they wanted to.

Did you look at those links? Those are examples of the quality of his work. I am VERY concerned about the future of the LSU Band. My fear is that Damon Talley (and crew) are creating a "new normal" of lowered excellence for the LSU Band.

I liked the band in OT at the A&M game.

I hope you are incorrect about this. However, as long as Damon Talley and Kelvin Jones are running the show, your assessment is 100% correct.

Of course not. They are so worried about their declining quality (and numbers), they figured hiring from within would be the "safe" move.

Whatever the current Tiger Band administration is doing sure isn't working, as evidenced by the drop in numbers over the past two seasons. I was hoping that LSU might care enough about restoring Tiger Band to their former glory to go out and bring in a fresh face as director. At least two other SEC band directors (USCe and Auburn) have ties to Tiger Band, as well as the band director at Texas. The fact that they chose the easiest route and didn't even conduct a nationwide search, tells me a lot about how little Queen, Alexander, etc. care about TGBFTL.

The bullshite blaring on the horns that those bands do is no better than the droning sounds that OP is talking about in this thread.

Also, tighten your drum heads and use the correct marching drums. If you want to see the best bands in the country, look at DCI, not SWAC colleges.

FKing could care less about the band. Queen (and Talley) know exactly what they are doing. In order to continue their "money grab" with the Tiger Band, they must have a weak Tiger Band director. Someone who will simply look the other way while Queen & Talley steal the band's funding for the school of music.

You’re exactly right about the money grab. F*King may not care about the band, but he is the one who hired Queen and is allowing him to steal from Tiger Band.

According to who? I don't like this particular bit that they perform, but to say they are one of the worst in the SEC is just asinine.

I agree that they're not one of the worst bands in the SEC just yet, but they are a shell of their former selves in every category. Tiger Band was always one of the smaller SEC bands, but they used to more than make up for it with their powerful sound and precision. Now, I can barely hear them in the stadium, and they are routinely drowned out by opposing bands, even when at home. While some of the halftime shows in recent years have been more entertaining, they are nowhere near as difficult and precise as the shows Tiger Band used to perform. There's something very "high school" about spelling out words or making stick figures on the field. Based on what I've seen of Kelvin Jones' past work as a director, it looks like more field spell outs are on the horizon.
