The 1970 LSU Tigers football team represented Louisiana State University during the 1970 college football season. Following a 3–0 loss to No. 2 Notre Dame at South Bend, LSU was extended a bid to face Big Eight Conference champion Nebraska in the Orange Bowl. However, the bid was contingent on the Tigers defeating both Tulane at New Orleans and Ole Miss at Baton Rouge in the final two weeks of the season.

That LSU defense, though, against Theisman (which rhymes with Heisman.)

Hi everybody, this is Walter Hill along with John Ferguson coming to you this afternoon from Notre Dame Stadium on the campus of Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana where the Fighting Tigers of LSU will take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish for the first time in the history of these storied programs.

This was the signature statement of LSU broadcasting moments before kickoff of each game. In an era where only a couple of games a year were televised this broadcast team was the fan's connection to the team if they were not able to attend the game in person.

My 91 year old great uncle talks about that game to this day. Said LSU's was the best defensive performance he's ever seen

LSU beats up their opponents is no myth. Notre Dame ranked number 4 lost to unranked USC the next week.

Rules favored the defense in that's days. 50% completion pctg was considered very good.

That game broke my heart. LSU had a lot of chances to put it away but couldn’t.
But then the rematch in Tiger Stadium happened the next year...

LSU arranged (I believe through some private network that Notre Dame had) to have the game broadcast in the Grand (Royal?) Cotillion Ballroom in the Student Union.

Casanova dropped an interception in the end zone before Notre Dame kicked their field goal IIRC.

The headlines in the Chicago papers' sports sections the next day was "If Notre Dame is #1 LSU is 1A" (or something like that).

I purchased the game film and the radio broadcast from Notre Dame about 10 years ago for $90 for my father. He played defensive end for that 1970s team and sacked Joe Theisman twice that game: One for 5 years and the other for 18 yards. It was a great game.

Those late 60s and early 70s teams were exciting to watch. Hopefully your dad is still around and if so, give him my best.

As a student, I saw the game at the Gym Armory. Game like atmosphere. Cheering and booing. Bad call of interference on the Tigers moved ND into fg range. Great defensive game.

I listened to the whole game with John Ferguson and Walter Hill calling it. Had a ball rushing the field the next season when we destroyed them in our house!

Bert Jones to cousin Andy Hamilton! Watched Hamilton take it down the W. sidelines into S. end zone...could have reached out and touched him...followed by the interception in S. end zone by Casanova.

Married w/3 kids, so didn't rush the field, but OH what a night.
