The majority of fans for any sports related school didn’t attend that school. Most people that live along I-12 for example are scared of big schools so they do Southeastern or don’t attend college at all. Yet the majority of those people still follow LSU sports because there aren’t any other viable options in the state. Hell almost all of Alabama doesn’t go to college but everyone of them picks Bama or Auburn.

You can be a fan of your State's flagship university. Never understood these locals that pull for Alabama.

I’ve never been to Baton Rouge
WTF?
Tailgating around campus, seeing Mike in his habitat, watching the crowd flood down the hill, taking your seat in Tiger Stadium, listening to the pregame poem, and watching the tigers run out onto the field... These are ritualistic experiences for our people. You will be accepted in due time, but until your first Saturday night in Tiger Stadium you are a tiger fan in training.

Coming from someone with 2 LSU degrees this is nonsense. If you’re a loyal fan, who cares?

i have seen it questioned on this site one more than one board. I never understood it either. But there are folks here who believe that you cannot be a fan of a university's athletics if you didn't attend the school.

You’re probably more of a fan than many alumni!

you're gtg man. LSU isn't that type of school anyway. maybe a few schools have some reason to be haughty towards fans who didn't attend the university. LSU isn't some highly ranked, prestigious university. it's a solid, big state school whose sports teams represent the entire state.

Anybody can be a fan of any team they want, there are no “rules”

I was raised to go to LSU, but was offered a free ride to another school in East Texas. So I did went were the money was and got my degree. While in college, I would still drive down to Baton Rouge when I could for the occasional football game, even sat in the student section a couple of times. Later joined TAF, did my time, and purchased football season tickets. Now I live in OKC, and was warmly welcomed by the local alumni chapter here, despite not actually attending LSU. I pay the annual dues and am considered an "ABC" by LSU (alumni by choice). They send me all the alumni stuff in the mail, monthly magazine, bumper stickers, etc. I probably give more to the school than many who actually graduated there. TAF treats me nice. I still go to the games.
Doesn't matter where you actually went to school. College football isn't a multi-billion dollar industry because of alumni who graduated from the school they support. It's because of its large base of fans, many of whom never even have the opportunity to attend college.
A friend who graduated from Texas once complained to me about the "t-shirt" fans in college sports, and how much he despised them. He defined a t-shirt fan as someone who didn't actually graduate from the school they cheered for. I quickly explained that their athletic program--the one he enjoys so much--was built on the back of "t-shirt fans" and millionaire boosters--of which he is neither. You take away all the "t-shirt" fans and college athletics would be no different than an elitist ivy-league polo club. No one would give a shite, licensing sales would be nonexistent, and ESPN sure as hell wouldn't broadcast it.

I grew up an Ohio State fan, being from nearby. Then I moved to Nola and then Baton Rouge. Lost my buckeye and became a huge LSU fan, attending all of the bball and football games. Been in Virginia for 30 years and still love the Tigers. My son went to LSU as well as a bunch of my nephews and nieces and ex. There is no bigger fan this planet than me...

Went to uno but wore lsu gear. Caught flack. Didnt care

Did you go to U of Saints? Do you wear their gear? Why do you have to have gone to school somewhere to be a fan and support the team? I am a lifelong resident of BR who went to USL. Still wear my Tiger gear every chance I get. Don’t own any USL gear!

Here’s the question: one of my buddies thinks I’m a lame arse because of my passion for the Tigers when I didn’t attend the school.
I've thought about this a lot.
I was a LSU fan pretty much from the moment I could walk.
Was that lame? Should I have waited until I was an actual student at LSU?
Sorta related, it was a bit earth shattering to learn that the cheers I learned as a kid sitting with my old man in the South End Zone had different words in the student section in the North End Zone. Like a totally different world but in the same stadium. And that was before STTD,B.
As for OP, you're probably a more legit Tiger fan than many. I got your back, baw.

Here's the deal. I know lots of LSU fans that went to other schools or didn't go the college route at all. If you didn't go to LSU but you support LSU 24/7, YOU'RE A FAN. If you support your school only when they are winning, you're a Bama fan.
