And I'm not afraid of him either
He isn't going to rip us apart by himself

he is really fast and can change direction like he has a tungsten steel ACL.
If he catches a slant for a 6 yard gain, he can go all the way.
He requires intense preparation and serious dedication at all times.
THE REAL DEAL.
Think of it this way, if you were the OC and you had Russell Shepard, would you get him the ball in space 20 times in a game?
That's the plan WV has for Noel Devine. He will return punts, kickoffs and be the #1 option.

Well, some people thought we wouldn't have any big problems slowing down McCluster (a similar back)last year. Until he took his first carry for 57 yards anyway and went on to get 140+ on us + receiving yards (and hell, he even threw a 20+ yard TD against us too).
Teams have obviously been keying on Devine since they have a new QB, but he still has rushed for 100+ in all three of their games. The defenses have done okay against him, but their QB is probably starting to get the hang of things.
Last year Devine's big games usually came against their big opponents - Auburn, UCONN, Pitt and Florida State in the bowl game. He torched all those teams and I think his lowest average was 7.7 yards per carry in those. He added 3 TDs against Auburn. The year before he put up over 200 yards on Auburn in just 17 carries. So he is obviously dangerous.
I don't think our D will be scared of him because our D is really fast and looks good. But he is BY FAR the best back we've faced and easily one of the very best we'll face this year. I'm sure we'll be keying in on him as well. But I'm sure he's going to be looking to shine under the bright lights, so it should be real interesting.
By the way, people were mentioning Demps...I hope LSU studies the Tenn/Florida game film. I don't know what Tenn. did, but they shut Demps down. He had like 26 carries for a 2.8 average. That's the first time I've seen him get significant carries and get shut down.

You make a pretty good argument
I think that LSU's defense is a notch above those teams however

I've seen him play and he reminds me a lot of Eric Metcalf... U. Texas and NFL.

Well, he's the kinda guy that can take any one play to the house.
That's true. As I wrote in another thread, you can hold him to 25 yards on 15 carries—and then he'll bust two for 50 yards each and two TDs. I watch WVU games whenever they're on, and I've seen what he can do. He, Austin and Sanders will be a good test for our defense.

A reall good back who should be taken very seriously....

it is not the ypc, its the big play risk.

Devine's nutts are so big, he needs dump trucks to carry them around.
Posted on 9/22/10 at 4:24 pm to thanksjhester
You realize that we are 3 games into the schedule?
His freshman year he averaged 8.6 ypc, sophomore-6.3 ypc, junior-6.1 ypc (plagued all year with injuries).
I can't believe what I'm reading.

I think we need to be concerned with him. McCluster/ Demps type.

This rarely happens anyways. It's a team sport.

I can't believe what you are reading. He is one of the better players in NCAA and has been since he was a freshman. Give credit where it is due. That said
LSU 30
WV 17

Well he is a senior on a team that has primarily run the ball for a long time. It's not like he is anywhere near eclipsing the NCAA career rushing record...
He also had to split carries with Slaton and White in his Freshman year, and White in his Junior year. Last year was his first as 'the man'.

I watched Bill Stewart display the worst clock management I've ever witnessed in a game before either last year or the year before.
Worse than miles, against Ole Miss?

Noel Devine is good. Plus he's an 8th year starter. He gets this year's Charles Alexander award.
Posted on 9/22/10 at 4:53 pm to biglego
Brah, Devine is easily one of the most explosive players in CFB this year. Teams are definitely going after him since he is the marquee player on WVU and the reason why his YPC are going down. However he can easily take it to the house. He may beat LSU on a play or 2 saturday but the Tigers should still pull it out.
