Of course I do, but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the fact that she's a star head coach because of that long career that you're talking about, and she'll bring instant credibility to LSU women's Bball program because of who she is. That's what I'm talking about!

Sure she is, but that’s not new. She was a star at Baylor.

On the national scene her moving from Baylor to LSU doesn’t really change much about tv ratings, etc. That’s what we are talking about.

And I believe that eventually it might even be able to break even if we keep selling out the PMAC and the women’s tournament gets its own deal with ESPN.

This will never happen, unless the women raised their ticket prices and the women would get TV deals close to what the men get from the reg. season abd ftom the NCAA tourney.

The gap is very wide.

Saw a tweet yesterday.
Two years prior to Mulkey , ticket and concessions sales were 146,000$.
First two years under Mulkey, 2.5 million.

It's a pretty simple equation. What are the revenues generated vs the expenses (of which is Mulkey's $2.0M salary)? Is LSU losing more money or making more money?

Nah, it's not that simple.
And I say that as someone aware LSU WBB is winning, but haven't watched more than a couple minutes total for the year (or really, her tenure here).

As someone else stated, Title IX makes having a number of women's sports mandatory. Women's basketball is probably the most prominent and covered of those sports.
You look at the average coaching salary, then compare the difference to what Mulkey is making, and ask:
Could LSU have spent this much money on marketing, and still gain the same amount of publicity?

Women's basketball is covered extensively on ESPN, including ESPN radio. I hear occasional blurbs on the morning shows I listen to driving to work, about as much as I do for the men (yeah, it's mostly NBA and NFL drama they discuss).
You don't get college baseball on the scroll tracker on ESPN, you do get WBB. So if you have ESPN on for sports, you see LSU popping up. That's a win.

Uconn women at their peak weren't breaking even. Outside of a massive TV deal I dont see that happening. Plus more exposure doesnt simply mean more profits, but it does guarantee more expenses.

Baseball and WBB are about on an even keel right now

Nationally yes. But LSU baseball is a massive outlier in this scenario.

Gonna disagree a little there.

I really don't care about women's basketball, couldn't tell you the last time I sat and watched a complete game. Might go back to Mulkey's years at La Tech for that, to be honest. And mostly for the Olympics team.

But I damn sure heard of La Tech, Mulkey and Leon Barmore. Tennessee and Summit. Uconn and Auriemma, etc.
(quick note, Google auto-corrected "Auriemma", it doesn't when you type in "Manieri").

WE like college baseball, but it doesn't much national coverage at all. It's funny, but your average MLB fans aren't watching the college game at all, when usually there's a lot of same-sport carryover (NFL fans watch college football at least casually, same for NBA and basketball. Enough to make the draft interesting to them, at least).

And I will say, any media coverage for LSU is a positive. Keeps us in the forefront.

It's still Women's basketball.

I wish LSU's Quidditch team success too, but I'm not watching it.

People like a winner. LSU fans love women's basketball when they're winning. The PMAC has been quite full most of the season. It's a beautiful sight!

Not true at all.

You can pull for them to win, but you don't have to go consume everything.

How many track meets have you been to? Swim meets? Tennis matches? You can go down the list; there are tons of sports that get maybe 15 people in attendance, and usually it's because they know someone there or are tied to that sport.

Well, we played terribly, and still won. Even Kim thought it wasn’t worth watching. That being said, you have to win some ugly game somewhere along the way, usually in a tournament like this.

This doesn't correlate with who is watching. Mulkey is one of the Goats but WBB will never, ever be a revenue sport.

It is great notoriety for LSU but it simply will never make financial sense.

It's not supposed to.

This is college sports, not pros. You are REQUIRED to carry 14 sports.....................13 of which "don't make financial sense". So, you either try to be good in everything, which carries benefits to the university and community beyond ticket sales and TV numbers, or you only concentrate on the one revenue producing sport...........football, period. Why is this hard for people to understand? Under the circumstances, yes, it makes sense to spend $2 million/year for a women's basketball coach. Hell, spend $3 million if it guarantees you're consistently in the top 5 nationally.

I am happy for the program and love Mulkey as a coach but I get nothing from watching the sport. I haven’t watched and never will and that’s Ok.
