Can you provide any info on Garrett Edwards? He seem to show some promise his freshman year until the end when it appeared he was having arm issues. Can’t say for sure about any type of injury but I recall him exiting a game at the end of that season and really never resurfaced this year.

Fans think EVERY new coach and player is the best thing since sliced bread. All one has to do is say the right things at a press conference or in an interview. I try to always hold my thoughts for a season or 2 and see what is actually going on

I would think Hurd and Floyd are favorites to start next year, with Taylor, Coleman, Little, Neal, Shores, and Noot right there in the mix as well

I base my opinion of him on what he was able to do to turn some MLB players around (Chris Archer) and what he helped build at Arkansas. He seems like a real players coach from what a lot of what I read said and a lot of sources say he is also really good with understanding and using analytics to help develop pitchers.
I think JK did a pretty good job of this as well. He did a lot with not a lot.

For sure. What made this different was because it didn’t come from the coach, but a guy from the team the guy kinda hosed, talking about the coach and his gauge on the disappointment from the players. But yeah, we’ll see.

In a perfect world:
Healthy Hurd
Skeens
Floyd
Mid week little or Taylor

I actually would like to see the midweek used on one of the Freshman unless said freshman gets a weekend spot.
If Floyd were to beat out Little and the freshman, I think Little will have to be a bullpen piece and you give the freshman starts on the weekdays.

I can roll with that. It’s refreshing to have options

I’m assuming you say this because it’s a great way to develop them long-term into potential weekend guys their SO seasons and beyond. And of course that makes sense. And you can always move them to the pen in the postseason. But if one of the FR comes in and battles for the weekend rotation, but just misses out and proves to be good enough to be the 4th starter on a team with legit championship aspirations, do you want him getting more non-leverage innings on a Tuesday against Southeastern or facing SEC bats in high leverage situations on the weekends? There’s an argument for either, and I’m sure they’ll figure it out. But, with so many good arms, it may take a while for roles to work themselves out.

I think there is a lot of value in guys learning to get through a lineup multiple times and get deep into games, even if it's against midweek competition.
I also think there is a lot of value in facing a higher level of competition and learning from that experience.
I think there are 12 or 13 midweek games. I think you could get two or three guys enough earnest starts (not "opener" or one time through the order) to accomplish the first goal, while still leaving them opportunity to accomplish the second goal.
Obviously that is in a perfect world and we know that performance ebbs and flows over the course of a season and development isn't linear. It seems like not a lot of coaches agree with my thoughts because there aren't a whole lot of coaches out there managing a pitching staff that way.
But there is also an issue of competing incentives. Win now vs long term development.

I think you can see tangible improvement on pitcher velo & performance under Wes Johnson. He’s not just another ghost hire.

This is sort of a cop out… but it depends. Last year, I honestly didn’t care about midweek starts for our younger guys. Our weekend starters could only go a few innings, I wanted them getting those relief appearances and getting all the experience they could against good hitters. However, if we had had two good starters and an okay one, I would have liked to see some of the freshmen getting midweek starts to fill their inning load prepping to replace the two front liners or being ready to jump up to Sunday for an injury.

Lotta guys throwing out their 2023 starting rotations without looking up Taylors Cape Cod numbers. His last outing was pretty fckn impressive.
"Taylor finished his summer with a 2.14 ERA and 30 strikeouts over 21 innings pitched."

Lester is wrong about the walks in that they were a result of pitching deeper into counts because he was fooling so many hitters. More foul balls and less balls in play. His pitch counts were elevated even without the walks. That is the bigger concern. The walks will come down naturally if the pitch calling is right.

Based on what I’ve read on this thread next years pitching comes down to
1) Floyd improving
2) Coleman coming back fr surgery
3) Signing Skenes.
So at this point, we aren’t much farther ahead than last year, correct?

I forgot about the transfer fr Vandy. Include him.

quote:our losses are on the back end with Reyz, Gervase and yes even Fontenot and Viet. Everywhere else we are older and deeper and more talented. If we can get started who go 6 innings on average instead of 3 or 4, then it’s a massive improvement and the bullpen isn’t relied upon every game. Also, we will score 12 runs per game so that will help the pitching.

Signing Skenes is really important for where this rotation will take us. I trust JJ will land him. That piece makes us an NC favorite IMO.
You can have Taylor/Floyd/Little/Shores/Noot fight for the Sunday role. A lot of great options.

Honestly, not sure why anyone hasn’t checked me
I was looking at Grant Taylor on the Yarmouth squad, he has 11 BB on 21 IP
LSU’s Grant Taylor has 2BB in 21IP.
