We're they done in the Geaux Font or just some different font than normal? Just wondering why they would change unless it was to streamline the fonts on all jerseys?

Was that the first time that numbers were on the side of the upper arms?

Nope.

I, too, was wondering if they were supposed to be in the Geaux font for numbers. I could understand this if it's true.

Over the last 40 years, the general trend is for jersies to be more form fitting (including almost eliminating real sleeves), reducing the ability of opponents to grab them. This change is merely an extension of this trend.
Since Nike took over in 96, the shoulder stripes have been erratic. Under Dinardo, the stripes were further out, but were sometimes wedge shaped. Under Saban and Miles, the shoulder stripes were over the top of the shoulder, but didn't extend past the seam. These uniforms have the shoulder stripes extending back down around the arm holes, but since the sleeves are now so short, they really can't go under the arms. This means that they have to take up space on the front. This necessitated narrowing the numbers.
I thought it looked good. The original photos of the uniform seemed to highlight that the shoulder stripes would end up connected to the small sleeve stripes under the numbers (which, OBTW, have been there since we went to nylon mesh jersies under Cholly Mac.) When worn, this connection pretty much disappeared. The narrow numbers made the whole uniform look streamlined, but were easy to see, even from the back row of the upper deck (where I was sitting).
I would be interested in seeing a prototype using the number font from the Billy Cannon era helmets, just to see if it works.
Must be the offseason--we're talking about the uniforms again.
