National Champion Coaches Who Have Been Fired Before

Besides Orgeron, how many other coaches have won a national championship after being fired by another Power 5 school?

I think A&M fired Stallings?

It'll be tough to find many if any because college is so different from to pros. Coaches that are fired aren't getting second chances at major programs (usually) that have a legit title shot and pick of the litter in terms of coaching hires.
The NFL retreads are a different story and likely most of the Super Bowl winning coaches have been fired before.

He was 20 years before going to Alabama. They hired him when he was 29 years old trying to get some of the Bear Bryant magic.

And he also was most recently a NFL head coach before going to Bama

I agree. I was talking to a guy who knows Malzahn and he said he was kinda defeated because he knows his chances of ever winning a title are pretty much gone now. So it made me think about all the coaches who ever got that 2nd chance and made the most of it. Orgeron is really fortunate that he got that chance because it doesn’t come often.

Pete Carroll was fired by the New England patriots, then won a NC at USC and and a Super Bowl with Seattle.
I know not a Power 5 school.

Lou left Arky bc of a disagreement with Broyles IIRC

Broyles fired him over the phone. The final straw was Holtz support of North Carolina Senate candidate(filmed commericals), Jesse Helms, who was opposed to a national holiday for MLK.
Broyles also fired two defensive assistants the same day, without telling the DC, who resigned in protest.

Howard Schnellenberger was fired by the Colts, for not playing Bert Jones. That was prior to winning a NC at Miami.
Bobby Ross was let go at the Citadel after going 24-31, before winning a title at GA Tech

No he didn’t. LSU won in 2003. 2004 was vacated.

Not a thing during the BCS era. When the BCS was formed, every coach and AD agreed that the BCS determined the college football championship. You can’t change the rules at the end of the season just because you don’t like the BCS title game choices. In 2003 ,the AP was just a poll. Fusc

I’ve heard that Bill Clinton, the governor, was involved as well, as the Democratic Party wasn’t happy.
