Charles Alexander is the correct answer.

This is what I have been thinking recently. A smooth, polished runner, with a relative size advantage over the secondary, equally comfortable inside or out. He also runs more upright (or "high") like Alexander, Cecil Collins or Joseph Addai. Collins and Addai are similar as well - both physical and effective after contact, with Collins being, perhaps, more of a punishing runner than Hill has shown thus far (but I understand when people say Hill is similar in style to Collins).

Some of the comparisons to Garry James are understandable, the jersey number reinforces that, but James was probably a little faster out of the back field and was more comfortable outside. He also ran with a more upright style.

Hill is a little taller, but another recent back he compares to somewhat would be LaBrandon Toefield.

Played against Garry James in HS. He beat our defense up so bad, coach started putting players in the defensive secondary just to fill a hole. I was a receiver but got reps at cornerback just in case of this type of situation. Garry James hit off tackle. I tried to get up there fast as he was stalled by a D lineman and a linebacker, he broke free ran me over. I woke up in Oschner Hospital. This is my claim to fame, got run over by Garry James. The guys hits were just brutal.

I have a buddy who played for my high school (a year or so younger than I) - he was one of a handful of guys who was smaller than I was, but he still played football. He has a great story about Eddie Fuller (scored 4 TDs against us in the first half, then sat) - 2 of the biggest, meanest guys at my high school played DE and DT and they completely shrugged off their blockers and made a terrific high-low attempt to tackle Fuller at the line of scrimmage, but failed, leaving my buddy, the cornerback who was probably 140 pounds in helmet, pads and cleats, attempted to tackle Eddie Fuller in his prime. It was like somebody's little brother trying to get in the way. That is my buddy's claim to fame - he got run over, badly, by Eddie Fuller (but so did a lot of people in CENLA back then).

Why? Gary James was shorter and faster. I don't see any reason to compare the two.

Wasn't it "Garry" James? Fond memories of that guy because he's a fellow Buccaneer and Marreroite. Marreroan? Anyway, yes, he was good, and yes Hill does look a lot like him.

Gary seemed a bit quicker, but the comparison is fair.

Garry James had a faster first step and better top end speed.
Hill has more power.
Alexander also had more top end speed but didn't have the agility of Hill or James.
Alexander was big, strong and fast, but never elusive.

BTW, Garry James coming to LSU was considered a HUGE recruiting win for the Tigers.
Hilliard had great stats, but James was the one with the better press at the time.

Not sure I would consider Hill elusive either. He appears to have good vision, but I don't think he's going to be breaking anyones ankles with his moves.

Didn't read through all of this, so sorry if it's already been said, but James was a very mediocre back who only had an NFL career because his measurable a were off the charts. If he played on today's team he'd be Ford.

yeah. And Ronnie Estay and a lot of other old players. Get a few drinks in him and he'll talk about those days for hours.

James never played up to his press clippings.
The best comparison is Keiland Williiams.
Keiland, like Alexander, was big, strong fast and as elsuive as a refrigerator.

I think it was more that Hiillard outshone him than that James didn't live up to his press.

I always liked the Harvey Williams type or even Sammy Martin. But I think those were more akin to Shep or maybe Magee.

Garry James was more about speed. If I had to make a comparison, it would be Charles Alexander (no, not the DL). Alexander had that same combination of size, power, and speed.

First time I saw Alexander in Allen Hall, I figured he had to be a lineman. Dude was huge by large, with the widest shoulders I'd ever seen to that point.
