Mulkey’s budget did not include the Siegfried and Roy Tiger outfit at La Tech and Baylor. LSU threw so much money at her she can now afford a S&R Tiger outfit that comes with an unlimited supply of cocaine.

Hats off to the women in Tickfaw that designed that dress.

Are you under the impression that Storrs, Connecticut is some bustling metropolis?

The difference , Storrs is a little over an hour's drive from Harford, Boston and Providence, and just a few from New York.

Louisiana Tech is the Georgetown of women's basketball. They cared about the sport when few other schools did and built a national power off of that. Now that more schools care about the game, they are just another mid-major.

It's the same thing with Georgetown. Back in the 70s and 80s, John Thompson would recruit areas and players other schools wouldn't and built a power out of that. Now, everyone recruits those areas and Georgetown is just another mid major school.

but could CKM have recruited to Ruston well enough to keep up with the Tennessee's and UCONNs back in the day?

Sure! Leon Barmore did it for years in Ruston, so why couldn't she do the same?

Editing to say, that in today's NIL environment, it would be MUCH harder to sustain national level success at La Tech, but she could do it.

LSU fans jealousy of Ruston is getting about as bad as ULL fans jealousy of LSU.

Kim might have coached there for a little while, but a time would have come quickly when they couldn't afford her and she would have found a high-paying Power 5 job.
You are spot on.

Leon Barmore(sp) did a pretty great job at making them nationally relevant

Was it Barmore, or was it Mulkey?

The 5 ft 4 in (1.63 m) Mulkey was an All-American point guard at Louisiana Tech University, winning two national championships as a player—the AIAW title in 1981 and the inaugural NCAA title in 1982—and in 1984 was the inaugural winner of the women's version of the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award, given to the nation's top college senior under 5'6"
- wiki

Barmore was made associate HC in 1982, took over as head coach in 1985 and hired Mulkey as an assistant. She was associate HC when Barmore retired in 2000. Kim Mulkey was there the whole time Barmore was.

She hung around as an assistant for 15 years. If she was so interested in making more money, why didn't she take a HC job sooner? LaTech was women's basketball. I suspect she would've worked for less to stay there and win.

Winning helps recruiting.

Look at Gonzaga.

Tech was competitive through the late 90s.

Once you are winning. Sure you can recruit b

Do people actually think Mulkey would still be coaching at LaTech today when her current salary is well over 2 million dollars and Tech can't even pay their football coach 1 million?

Perhaps if she sustained LaTech's early success their athletic department would generate sufficient revenue to pay her?

You don't need to be a large institution to be successful at basketball.

I love Ruston. Like seeing LTU have success and all but let’s be real here. You’re talking Big12 vs C USA. Baylor’s administration went all in on athletics about a decade ago. That’s why their FB and men’s bball also saw big success. Mulkey was behind the scenes they’re doing more than we will all know.

It was a matter of time before she left Ruston for a bigger job.

That’s why she left, they wanted 3yr deal, she wanted 5, Hey but that’s alright la tech lives off the past. They hated winning football games 17-14, 21-10, so they got rid of Dork Holtz. Now they can lose 65-28 and feel like they gave NC St all they wanted. It’s a delusional moral victory fan base. Local media talks about FAU in the final four like tech is in, talks like Mulky’s Nattys are somehow connected to their wbb program. They hire coaches or relatives of coaches, like Bicknell Jr, Holtz Jr, and Pat Summits son. It’s SO Creepy you would have to hear the locals to get a sense of how creepy it is.

Mulkey may have stayed through a 4-5 year contract with Tech and then moved on. Her husband was Tech QB and graduate there so who knows if that would have factored in.

She was an assistant there for 15 years. She could have BEEN moved on to be a HC somewhere else for a lot more money than she was making. But she stayed hoping to be the HC at her alma mater. I think she might've stayed.
