Below is each team's NET ranking and quadrant resumes for each team. This is a quadrant 3 game for LSU against Mississippi State as they are just outside the Top 75 (31-75 at home is Quadrant 2). These results are as of 1/10/20.

#25 (10-4, 2-0 SEC) LSU
Quad 1 = 2-1
Quad 2 = 2-3
Quad 3 = 2-0
Quad 4 = 4-0

#83 (9-5, 0-2 SEC) Mississippi State
Quad 1 = 0-3
Quad 2 = 1-0
Quad 3 = 4-2
Quad 4 = 4-0

LSU as of recent
LSU is coming into this contest 2-0 in the SEC winning our last 3 games all against Quadrant 1 opponents (at the time) Liberty, @ Tennessee and Arkansas. We demolished Arkansas on the offensive glass 23 to 3, yet only won 79-77, showing why Arkansas is such a tough out this season to be able to stay in a game they lost the second chance point battle 26-0. In pretty typical LSU fashion, we again did not shoot the ball very well from 3, but scrapped our way to extra opportunities with our overpowering size against Arkansas. Against Mississippi State, we likely will have to take a different approach as they actually have height.

Mississippi State as of recent
Things have gone rather poorly for the Bulldogs as of late losing 3 of their last 4 games after an 8-2 start to the season. They are 0-2 in the SEC losing to Auburn at home and Alabama on the road in which neither game was very competitive although they gave Auburn a little run for their money in the 2nd half. End of December MSU also had an inexplicable loss to a mediocre at best New Mexico State team in Jackson, MS. MSU has more talent than their record indicates, and Howland really needs to get the ship righted there as things are falling apart right now and they are in desperate need for a win to stay somewhat in contention for a tournament spot. This is all despite one of their better players Nick Weatherspoon (3rd year starter) coming back for the first time this year after a lengthy suspension against New Mexico State, so they are just 1-3 since he came back.

Mississippi St. projected starters
C (6'11, 255) rJR. Abdul Ado
PF (6'10, 250) SO. Reggie Perry
SF (6'7, 235) SO. Robert Woodard II
SG (6'4, 175) SR. Tyson Carter
PG (6'2, 185) JR. Nick Weatherspoon

Abdul Ado makes a living protecting the rim and rebounding for MSU. He averages just 5.5 points but 7 rebounds (3.4 offensive) and 2 blocks per game. Abdul isn’t much an offensive threat, but he cleans up a lot on offense for MSU. He’s an experienced player for Howland at MSU and knows his role. He has a 16.4 PER on the season.

Reggie Perry is MSU’s NBA level front court player. He’s a huge power forward who you have to guard all over the floor but really will bully you down low. He averages 15.7 points, 9.6 boards (3.4 offensive) and a block per game. He’s an underrated passer for his size with 2.5 assists a game. Perry leads MSU with a 29.9 PER on the season.

Robert Woodard II is a very versatile guard/forward for MSU. Again a guy you have to guard everywhere shoots an astonishing 54.5% from 3 this year, but takes about 2.5 shots from 3 a game only. He averages 12 points and 7.8 rebounds (2.9 offensive) a game while having a 19.9 PER on the season.

Tyson Carter is the veteran guard in this group, he took over PG duties mostly while Weatherspoon was out and did an ok job there. He averages 14 points, 4 assists and about half his shots come from 3 like you would expect from a SG but is only 30% from there. His PER on the season is 16.6.

Nick Weatherspoon…if it feels like a Weatherspoon never leaves MSU it’s because this is Q. Weatherspoon’s younger brother at MSU who left MSU last season after his senior year and Nick is finally a junior now. Nick was suspended the first 10 games this year but has come back to assume scoring PG type duties. He’s unlikely to be a high assist guy but he can score and he does it from 2 way more than from 3. He hasn’t made a 3 in his first 4 games since coming back and he’s averaging 14 points, 2 assists (to 3.5 turnovers) this year and has a 15.4 PER.

Mississippi State top bench players
CG (6'3, 195) FR. Iverson Molinar
SF (6'6, 205) rFR. D.J. Stewart Jr.
PF (6'8, 225) JR. KeyShawn Feazell

This isn’t a long bench Howland will play. Prince Oduro was playing some before Weatherspoon came back but with him back his role has diminished to rarely plays. Molinar was a starter for Weatherspoon while he was out and averaged 8.6 points and 2.3 assists per game while shooting almost 49% from the floor. Stewart is a swing guy who can play multiple spots and averages 8 points, 2 board and 2 assists a game with over 26 minutes a game off the bench. Feazell is MSU’s big off the bench and really just provides some rebounding with 2 points and 3 boards in 15 minutes a game

MSU has got the makeup of a pretty good group of guys, but they just can’t seem to put it all together. They destroy teams on the offensive glass being #2 in the country there per kenpom with lots of quality height, however their defense is even worse than ours sitting at #115 in efficiency per kenpom. Their offense sits a very good #28 per kenpom but they aren’t great from 2 or 3 really. They turn it over A LOT so expect some pressing from Wade.

Honestly, this should be one of our tougher matchups because MSU mimics us in a lot of ways. Very good offensive efficiency, great offensive rebounding, mediocre at best defense…but they have more height than we do, and that will be a challenge. We however shoot it better notably from 2 and the line. Williams, Days and Watford will have their hands full with Ado, Woodard and especially Perry who is absolutely NBA quality big and a load. I think if MSU still hasn’t snapped out of it, we should take this, but seriously watch out for this team, they are looking for a big win to snap out this funk they are in and this could be it for them. They are already almost in desperation mode in terms of staying in it for the tournament.

Projected LSU Starting 5
PF (6'6, 230) SO. Emmitt Williams - #5
PF (6'6, 240) SO. Darius Days - #0
SF (6'9, 235) FR. Trendon Watford - #2
SG (6'4, 205) SR. Skylar Mays - #4
PG (6'4, 205) SO. Javonte Smart - #1

Main rotational players
SF (6'5, 200) JR. Charles Manning Jr. - #11
SF (6'5, 210) SR. Marlon Taylor - #14
SF (6'5, 225) rFR. Aundre Hyatt - #15

Kenpom's Prediction: LSU 78 Mississippi State 71

MSU defense is truly abysmal, the goal for the first half on offense should be to drive and attempt to get perry and/or adu in foul trouble. Perry and woodward are good players and weatherspoon looks to be good but kinda never plays smart to me.

Honestly if we come out hot MSU will probably just give up

I am once again impressed how Coach Wade and his staff are pulling this team together. Tennessee and Arkansas have been impressive wins. The early games we played so badly it made you cringe. But turnovers have been much better, shot selection and sharing the ball are getting better although still need some work. Rebounding has been off the chart along with good solid defense for the most part.

I was surprised to look at our stats and see that we are making nearly a third of our three's. At times it seems we can't make one for anything. It would be pretty bad if it wasn't for Skylar and Manning who are above 40%. By the way, I really like Manning's game and think he should get more playing time and take more shots. He made a great block in the Arkansas game also that saved the game for us.

But the guy who we are depending on is the freshman Watford. Lot of weight for a freshman to bear and you can see that at times he is pressing, trying too hard. It seems he is either doing something really bad (Turnovers) or something great, rebounding and scoring. Needs to settle in and let the game come to him instead of trying for the spectacular all the time. But boy are we lucky to have him. Great player.

I'm not saying Arkansas isn't a good team, but they played WELL above their average offensively (particularly in the first half). Without that performance the LSU game wouldn't have been close. I knew LSU was in good shape to win when in the first half Ark shot 52% FG, nearly 40% from 3 and 100% from the FT line with only 2 turnovers and still ONLY had a 3 point lead despite LSU shooting well below their season average.

IMO, Arkansas was a pretty good matchup for LSU. MSU appears to be a tougher matchup as LSU doesn't appear to have many clear advantages over State. Neither team is very good defensively. Both are good offensive teams (though LSU is better). Both are terrific rebounding teams. Both can have turnover issues (though LSU has improved there). The most glaring difference appears to be pace of play. LSU wants to play fast, while MSU wants to slug it out in a slow, halfcourt game that allows their big guys inside to be a big factor.

While it didn't matter vs. Arkansas, I think LSU is going to have to make some shots from outside to win this one. Dominating the post and glass is very unlikely vs. State

All this has more to do with our defense not being very good and Arkansas' defense being very good more than anything IMO.

Physically I agree here, but Arkansas plays so much harder and smarter than MSU does.

In the end tough to not be impressed with what Musselman has done halfway through the season there. He doesnt exactly have an even decent overall roster IMO but he's got them 12-2 and almost won at our place mostly through high effort and playing smart basketball. Thin kabout the fact they dont have decent big man really on their entire roster. They have a 6'6 undersized PF who plays hard on defense there and that's about it. They will be overmatched a lot in SEC play but pull out more than their fair share I think if they remain as competitive against us against other.

Personally I certainly expect some drop off in SEC play for them, kenpom seems to see them around 11-7 and I think that's fair give or take a game probably.

I mean, we’re kind of in that same boat to a lesser degree. I will concede that Emmitt and Days play a lot bigger than 6’6”.

I know Watford is listed at 6’9”, but he only looks about an inch taller than Days and Williams, and plays more of a 3, whereas Days is more of a stretch 4 and Emmitt a 4/5, if only out of necessity.

I was a little worried about how we’d fare against bigger teams, but height can be deceiving. It’s length that really matters, and I think we’re okay there.

Listed heights don’t account for the length of the neck. Having a longer neck than someone might make you taller, but if their shoulders are the same height and their arms just as long it’s not really an advantage. None of our guys have inflated heights due to having longer necks.

Plus, our bigger guys are super physical.

I see a lot of close games this year. If I were a betting man, I’d say somewhere between 11-7 and 13-5, with a likelihood of 12-6 for us this year. Then again, I didn’t foresee 16-2 last year so what do I know...

Man-I know it is all about Clemson this week, but I have a feeling this a HUGE game for our SEC chances in hoops tonight. MSU really matches up well against is several areas.

Our next 2 games are probably versus the 2 worst teams in the SEC Texas A&M and Ole Miss which for road games are very winnable! a 5-0 start to the SEC would be HUGE for confidence and simply NCAA Tourney positioning. I know they are ALL important, but this game tonight at home is HUGE

I think am taking the +8 points tonight...anyone have any thoughts tonight?

MSU and LSU seem to be mirror images of each other, but I Mays and Smart could just be WAY better than Spoon and Carter.

I keep thinking Miss State is going to turn things on and they keep shitting their pants every week.

Cant imagine there is a big crowd tonight (shocking) and I think I am going to take the 8 points here.

Maybe it's just me, but I worry more about teams that slow the game to a snail's pace and play defense.

With Watford and good guard play, LSU could take most teams, but will they?

I was just listening to the radio in the car. Chris Blair days Wade is worried about this game for 3 reasons.

1. LSU just put it all out on the floor to beat Arky.

2. State is going to be hungry for their first conference win.

3. State is different than the last 3 teams weve played. He says he's interested to see how they attack the paint area, the rim and the glass.

I'm pretty fired up for this one.

I'm not sure, brother. I can't stand her voice. It sucks because she is pretty good at her job too.

On another note. We have 10 minutes left in the game currently on ESPN.
