Message Posted by bbap He WAS getting on base.
Katz WAS hitting HR's every time he stepped to the plate. Cotton was mowing every team down he faced. Raph was hitting 1200 for a while. It happens. It's part of baseball. There isn't a person in baseball at any level that doesn't have an off week or so. It's the ones that come back that you want in there. For Laird to do what he did to earn that starting spot as a walk on let's you know he's special. Just give him time.
Guess we had the same thought Dodd.

Laird is important in the two spot when McMullen gets on; when he doesnt then Laird is less effective. I hate small ball but Laird's bunts ( the ones he nails) have been important in games because with his speed he not only gets the runner over, he gets on base himself.

He's had a solid year and is fantastic in the outfield, but I've been saying for weeks that the guy never hits anything hard. Nearly all of his hits are ground balls that allow him to beat the throw to first. That's great of course, but he poses no threat outside of that. He's even less effective with runners on base as his would-be infield hits with the bases empty become fielder's choices with runners on base.

He needs to hit the weights in the offseason for sure.

Laird isn't in the lineup to drive in runs. He's there to get on base and score. It's no different than an infielder that barely hits his weight but fields everything hit near him. You have them in there for a reason.

And he hasnt been getting on base lately, id prefer katz and bregman coming up with guys on. Im giving him the weekend to turn it around. If not, im calling PM

I understand his role, but the kid is not fulfilling it and offers little other offensive threat right now.
I don't think he should be removed from the line-up yet, especially given his defense, but as of now he is a hole in the batting order.

Everything in this thread is stuff I've been saying all season.

You are correct. SEC only BA is .224 and OB% is .302.

5 guys didn't get a hit tonight. The majority of the LSU lineup vs Tulane didn't get 1 hit. Meanwhile Laird found a way on and scored one of 4 runs in a one run win. Yeah, he's the one that should be moved.
He's asked to bunt damn near every time up. So he's either sacrificing himself or getting behind in the count and having to swing at basically 1 pitch per at bat. Kinda puts him in a bind IMO.
I'm not opposed to moving him down. If you're going to do it, bat him 9th so his speed can produce runs when the top of the lineup comes up behind him.

I have wanted to start this thread for a little over a week now. Due to my low number of post of I chose not to
but I want him in the line up one way or another. He hit .375 and really hasn't hit at all once he reached that peak.

While I understand some of the comentary on Laird I really think y'all need to tap the breaks and relax a bit. Laird is doing fine in his role and unless he stops gettin on base completely or fails to get bunts down he won't be leaving the 2 hole IMO.
Ibarra doesn't work in 2 hole cuz he's one of the worst bunters on the team.

Also, I expect the team to be jacked up an ready to go vs SC this weekend. I think the Katz/Raph switch is gonna pay off big. . . It's time for Mason to turn it on for the stretch run!

The 2 hole hitter doesnt have to bunt

Y'all think mainieri asking him to bunt all the time might have something to do with the slump? It seems like he's asked to bunt in like half of his plate appearances. And if he can't get a bunt down, he's gonna be behind in the count most of the time.

Remember the last time Laird got a sac bunt down? This team mashes. We don't need to sac bunt. Let Laird swing away. His average has been going down because Mainieri doesn't let him get into any rhythm at the plate bunting everytime.
