He was way behind. It would've taken some time to close the gap with the competition and gain rapport with his teammates/coaches. I do agree that his limited opportunities probably limited his chance to close the gap quicker.

CPM has demonstrated year after year that he cares more about developing high potential players in the nonconference games than he does winning. So why did he continue to frick around with Bianco this year instead of giving Hampton an opportunity to reach his potential?

People keep saying this and I just don’t get the reasoning. Behind Hellmers who started game 1 with less than a week of practice at the position? Behind Bianco who can’t hit a beach ball much less a baseball? Hampton was hitting pretty well in the early going his freshman year last year before his injury. A lot of kids missed a lot of baseball when the season stopped to fall ball. He can’t have been that far behind.

Then this could just boil down to a scholarship numbers thing. Baseball didn’t have 100% to give him, so in that regard Mainieri is correct, it’s a bad idea.
Yeah but PM also said he was caught off guard. That doesn’t seem like a scholarship issues coming up but a PT issue.

CPM watches practice, we don’t. I’m willing to assume the hall of fame coach is right on this one.

Money is at least part of it though. PT is too I’m sure. But I doubt PM wanted to go from paying nothing for him to footing the whole bill.

You bring up practice a lot. I like to counter with Bianco and Hellmers and PM’s shite evaluation track record. Time is a flat circle.

I don’t blame him for that.

I am late to the party. Isn't he (Hampton) on football scholarship? Or am I off base about which "he" we're talking about?

If it is Hampton, his parents paid his way through PDS/MUS, super elite travel ball, and elite private training since he was like 8 years old. His middle school education cost more than OOS tuition at LSU. Throw in what they spent on baseball and the difference is laughable.

It’s pretty simple to justify whether he deserves to play over Bianco. It’s called “batting average” and “defense”. If you do those 2 things better than the next guy it would seem he should be able to show that is the case. Does he hit good enough and play good enough defense to displace the next guy. LSU’s whole team is loaded with talent. All of their players were the best on their high school teams. Now he’s the little fish in the big pond.

Bianco is a complete head scratcher for me. PM pretty much admitted that Hellmers at 3B was just a hunch. I can't really see any other opportunities for Hampton to get on the field more than just garbage time right now (and he didn't even get much of that).

You sure Hampton’s parents were footing that entire bill? I went to both, and once they started recruiting athletes, financial aid was used for most of those kids.

I do wonder if/how the scholarship conversation played into all of this. I believe his family is pretty well-off as others have said, but the scholarship issue could also just be adding insult to injury for Mo.

Seems like it’s likely a lot of frustration just coming to a head. When you’re on a football scholarship at a school like LSU, the expectation is that you are first and foremost a football player. That means missing significant portions of the baseball offseason. Combine that with the short season last year, COVID isolation, etc. and it’s just an all around shitty situation.

But if he leaves the football team (regardless of whether he picks up a baseball scholarship) that’s another 2019 initial counter wasted. I would think it puts Paul in a tough spot - if he tells Hampton he should stick with both sports and Hampton leaves out of frustration, Mainieri is the bad guy. But if he tells Hampton “sure, no problem” he’s still the bad guy for wasting a football scholarship.

The only outcome that’s not a net loss for LSU is Hampton sticking it out with both sports which seems to be the suggestion Maineiri made when asked, if you believe him.

Sucks but I wish the best for the kid. Sounds like his passion is definitely baseball.

How do you tell a potential first round draft pick that is ready to quit football to dedicate himself to baseball that he has no spot here? Mainieri is fricking trash.
