speaking of armchair climbers

First Person in a Wheelchair Climb to Kilimanjaro
28-year-old Erica Davis of Carlsbad, CA is believed to be the first paralyzed woman to ascend Kili, arriving on the summit in her wheelchair in January of 2010.

I have some friends that are climbing it this summer. I met them a few years ago climbing in Peru. Well one of them gave me the schedule of their hiking days. I quickly said "no." You hike on a normal schedule, but the last day you start at like 2am, get there around 6am, stay an hour, then hike back down for 8 hours. F that. But props to her, I wanna go to Kilimanjaro.

Presumably you have a 2-3 week vacation every year. A others have said, it's not that expensive. If you have other priorities, that's fine, but just say that instead of implying that it's not possible for you. A postal worker has climbed Everest. If there's enough want to, there's usually a way.

Nothing at 19k feet is a joke or a walk in the park. It is not a technical climb, more like an extremely long ascending hike at altitude.

You definitely need to be in shape. Most people hike for 7 days to summit.

Good for her!

7 days is SLOW. 19k feet really isn't that bad. Quit acting like you know when you don't.

It's not a technical climb, but the altitude isn't trivial.

And it is the tallest freestanding mountain in the world. The distances involved aren't insignificant.

ETA: 5 to 9 days is normal for Kibo.
