Anyone know what happens to military commitment from athletes entering the portal?

The commitment begins with the 3rd year at the academy.

Military commitment is waved but they have to pay back the tuition that has been paid for by the taxpayers

If we really want/need him, NIL can pay back the money.

Agreed. It’s not a problem I’m just stating the ramifications for voluntarily leaving

There is no tuition to a service academy. What you are thinking of is an ROTC scholarship. Service academy students are paid a monthly salary and the expenses associated with school are deducted from your pay. If you leave after your second year, you don’t owe anything.

I got it directly from a couple of AF Academy swimmers back in 1996. They were about to have to make their decision.

as long as the cadet is not starting their third year (im assuming that is defined by the service academy) then they can transfer.

it gets more confusing after that.

im sure the DOD invests probably 250k at the minimum for a service academy cadet to go a full four years whether its at west point, annapolis, or colorado springs

This isn’t quite accurate. You can quit any time before the first class of your junior year. Show up for that class and you’re officially indebted to the tax payers.

I am not a fan of service academy athletes using transfer portal. They took a spot from 13 other qualified candidates when they accepted their appointment.

Are you an Army player entering the portal and came on here to find out what's next?

I stated it poorly, I should have said if you leave at any time prior to starting your third year. I had Skenes situation in mind when I said he could leave after his second year without owing anything, obviously because he hasn’t started his third year.
