See this LINK - this is LSU's new "25 is Coming" marketing campaign to sell season tickets based on Simmons's arrival.

This was just a topic of conversation on Mike & Mike re: amateurism and schools making money off amateur athletes. Greeny and today's guests, Jemele Hill and Michael Smith, all found it offensive and inappropriate.

ETA: Primary point of contention being, this is not using a player's vague likeness, but LSU is clearly using the player's number and name as the spearhead for the marketing campaign.

Thoughts?

I respect Michael smith but all of those other people are idiots and they are all hypocrites to bash this and not just about everything else involving college athletics.

Also college athletics is a big part of how they get paid.

Additionally LSU would be stupid not to market its assets to increase team support.

To their credit they are arguing that they shouldn't be singling him out since that is against ncaa policy. NCAA argues that they schools market their teams and university,

I personally wish we would have waited for him to get on campus. That would have mitigated the risk.

They have the moral high-ground, because everyone knows that ESPN is all about the purity of sport.

It's an ncaa problem not an lsu problem. These kids should be paid and what the ncaa as a whole does is so hypocritical it's ridiculous.

This is an excerpt from LSU's press release (the link I posted):

This year’s campaign will focus on the arrival of the nation’s No. 1 recruit, Ben Simmons, and his chosen jersey number “25.”

is this like when ESPN signed a multi-billion dollar deal with the SEC, of which the athletes receive nada?

Saying it's "offensive" is quite a stretch. And "inappropriate" is such a vague word that it could apply to nearly anything. I think the college system is pretty broken (from athletics to academics), but this is just a match on a fire.
Athletes in college need some sort of representation. They need to at least be able to make schools fight for their "contract" by offering 4 year scholarships and extended health benefits if injured, if not outright cash.
All of that being said, I can't really take anyone serious who can sit next to Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith everyday and not shoot themselves in the face.

He's been dealing with this pressure since he became the #1 player in the country. He'll be fine.

Christ I'm so tired of titty babies complaining about marketing college athletes and not paying them. THEY GET A COLLEGE EDUCATION FOR FREE. That is their fricking payment back for the school being able to make some money off them. These players are going to the pros and making millions anyways. Why do they need a little kick back in college ON TOP of a free education? shite in this case they didn't even say his name or give an actual picture of him.

Yeah, whatever, had to pay down my student loans this morning /rant
