I’ve found that when people come to the rant for help we essentially end up with a thread of 1you aren’t the only one. Don’t feel isolated 2this is a horrible place to vent your fears and anxiety go get a pro 3then finally people making light of the situation in diff ways.
But to be honest that’s on u. We already said 1 and 2.

To me, the only thing to do is to keep moving, even if it is tiny steps. I would make a list. Sometimes the first thing would be "turn on computer." Sometimes that is the only thing I could get done for an hour. It was that bad. But getting that done and scratching it off the list got me moving.

This is great advice and could go on the list with "do the boring things".

Taking the win over small accomplishments in the right direction is so helpful to turn your attitude around. And is also something your depression can convince you is trivial.

Depression is best fought when regarded as a true opponent and not a by product of other life events that you need to wait out.

A couple thoughts after reading people's responses:

1. Thanks for not letting me down with the expected downvotes and jokes about mental health. It's what makes this place the special corner of the internet that it is. Thick skin recommended in my field and in this place.

2. Yes, I used AI to help put my thoughts in order. It's a great tool. I can speak my thoughts into my phone and they don't have to be in the right order, and this tool can arrange them in a logical format. But the thoughts are mine.

3. Someone mentioned the "wokeification" of the therapy field (my word, not the specific word used by the other poster). This is an unfortunate reality. Many people in the field should not be providing assistance to others because they can't get themselves and their own issues out of the way. And yes, many female therapists buy into the idea that men are the problem. Its' why guys want to come see me instead of them.

4. There is still a stigma attached to mental health issues, although it has gotten a hell of a lot better in recent years. Interestingly, the same dynamics that have led to the field being captured by young people with no life experience have led to this lessening of the stigma. See tiktok and instagram "therapy" content.

Mass produced therapy doesn't seem to be working.

I would never go to a therapist unless it was a male. Women should only go to female therapist also.

Why should you determine what sex therapist someone should see? What a ridiculous statement.

Me and my mom were in an accident and she passed away and I was struggling with grief and guilt bad. Having nightmares every night. Saw a local place and a female was a specialist in grief. So went to see her and talked with her once or twice a week for a few months and she was wonderful. Gave me some tips and within a month I was not having nightmares anymore or beating myself up daily.

Only time in my life I've ever been to a therapist but I would go back to her in a heartbeat. Guy, girl, whichever one that can help you, that's really all that matters. If you only wanted to see a guy that's fine, but saying everyone should see the same sex counselor is pretty dumb.

Does the couch come with the job or do I need to find a therapist that advertises the couch?

i think it depends on what you're getting help for. counseling for grief is pretty universal.

but what can a female, no matter how much experience and education, tell you about the struggles that men deal with? it's like the 5'3" 115 lbs sportcaster explaining the inner workings of an offensive line. the best she'll ever have is an academic understanding.

A guy's therapy should be...his hobby. Play golf, hunt, fish, hike, work with your hands, grow food, raise animals, collect coins, etc.
