It's entirely reasonable they could have won this meet. I think they easily left 30 points on the table. Should have scored in the Hammer, had a second long jumper, 100, 200, 110H, 400, 4x1 and 4x4.

Well he finished second 2 days ago but still

LSU finishes 7th for the men. After all the hype, women might finish higher as long as they can hold a baton.

Bertman not opening the checkbook for Pat Henry has to be one of the biggest jokes.

Shaver needs to retire soon. This has been such an epic meltdown over the past 2 weeks, I'm not even mad anymore. Shaver just has that ability to pull defeat from the jaws of victory. It's hilarious.

Yeah but Pat Henry is 67. I know some coaches want to coach til they die but even his teams has started to fall off so I wonder if he has the same steam he used to. He's had one title in the past 5 years. Might be time to try to find a younger coach.

Not the first time, won’t be the last.

They had enough qualify they should have finished top 3 at the least. IDK what happened, but everyone seemed to underachieve. If it was just one person or one team (like the relay team) I'd say it was the individuals, but it seems like a lot underachieved. IMO this is on Shaver.

Dennis Shaver just cannot get it done: This dropped baton is routine!! False starts! Any number of late season mishaps have been his MO, just does not know how to get the team geared up for championships. The recent SEC Championship was a fluke, and LSU can do much better!

How did he even get the job when Pat Henry left? Pat was a fricking legend. I hated when he left. And the track teams haven't been as good since.

Absent Mondo snapping a pole in half, this meet went about as bad as it could have for LSU. The amazing double win in long jump and high jump was nice, though.

Fuuuuugggg and we were favored to do something this year.

Well, Pat was definitely better.

Stupid question - how is a coach responsible for baton drops in individual meets?
I get the criticism of no middle or long distance guys. That’s a structural / recruiting issue that coaches are responsible for. Shaver decided to not recruit those guys or hire a coach to develop them.
Isn’t dropping a baton the runner’s fault? I’m sure they literally work that every day in practice.

Of the 214.5 points scored by the top 5 teams in the meet how many came in events 800m or longer? What % of those points were scored by Stanford? Building a contending team with material scholarship dollars dedicated to distance runners is a losing proposition, especially in Baton Rouge.

Teams typically don’t do baton work more than 2x/week.

That’s exactly what I’m saying dumb frick.
That was one of those situations where you let a high caliber coach go with no viable replacement available. They did the best they could hiring someone but they shouldn’t have let what they had go in the first place.

Hypothetically, Shaver resigns tomorrow. Who does LSU go after?

I’d go after Duane Ross from North Carolina A&T personally
