This pisses me off.

What has Sam done since the season to drop?

This happens every year. A player or two drop for no apparent reason.

with the rookie pay scale, it won't negatively affect him that much. in fact, he might get drafted lower by a team that doesn't suck, and have a much better chance to be successful than getting drafted earlier.

I think Sam had been declining in Kiper's rankings even during the season, and Mel generally gives the reason in the player's writeup until he drops out.

we haven't had the combine or pro day though, and it's not like Mel's rankings are gospel.

That's what I'm saying. You've had a couple of all star games where fringe players can show their stuff but ultimately Sam has done nothing to help or hurt his rank since the season ended.

Damnit I would love for the Mingo to fall a couple spots to the Saints with us switching to the 3-4 supposedly.

Mel Kiper and Todd McShay have the easiest job in the world. Watch college and pro football around the clock. Then make predictions completely based on THEIR opinion. Pretend like they know something, but change their minds 5-6 times to cover their arse. Then completely and utterly fail, get maybe 3 or 4 picks right. Say, "I'm so surprise with that pick. I didn't have that!" Then do it again next year and be considered the best in the business.

Watch the draft. It will have top 5 on Kipers Big Board. That top 5 will sit there unchanged for 10-15 picks. Especially in the later rounds. He doesn't know shite!

He's done nothing to drop, but a better question is: what has he done to justify the first round?

Sam is a strong DE who can really clog things up in the running game. So? He is not a particularly good pass rusher - even in college. He's the kind of guy who will start in the NFL but have a forgettable career. Maybe the end of the first round, but probably later.

I agree. Sam had so much hype at the beginning of the year and slowly got less better. (sayin he got worse is unfair)
But come on guys he had trouble with his pass rush this year even against weak OLine. His run stopping ability was there. but his lack of dominance pushed him out of the top20 atleast. I still believe he will be a late first rounder though.

It is not just Mel. Lots of respectable mocks have Sam out the first round.. for whatever reason. I think it's more other guys stepping up than anything Sam really did.

Reid and montgomery UNDERperformed this year. Not overly shocking.
