If the WRs are covered and there is a gaping hole to run to and slide for a much needed 1st on third down, you do it to help win in a close game.
You don’t insanely chuck it deep and hope for a TD.”
Agee 100%. When it’s there for the taking-take it!!

The qb can run in an rpo
"An RPO is a play in which the quarterback has the option to hand the ball off to a running back, pass to a receiver, or keep the ball and run themselves, all based on the defense's reaction post-snap. This decision is made in real-time, giving the offense a strategic advantage."

Sometimes, but that is probably not designed in the RPO's that we are running.

Since he won't run, stop running our receivers 10 and 15 yards down field. Get it out of his hands quickly.
2019 lsu and 2020 bama had prolific offenses and they lived on screen to backs and quick plants and shallow crossing routes on alot of there pass plays. Just give more options to get the ball out quick and see what happens.

the QB can run on every play.
the question is does the play not work if the QB never runs
I don’t think we run anywhere near the amount of RPOs or Read Options people think we do.

Nuss does not need to run but he does need to keep it occasionally on the zone reads to keep the defense honest.
Nuss does not need to run, but he does need to keep it occasionally? What the frick does that mean? What’s he supposed to do if he keeps it on a zone read if not run it?
But are we actually even running zone read? Does Nuss have the option to pull it and keep it or are those called running plays to the RB that we just “disguise” as zone read? Either way is terrible.
I watched Hanny and Richard Dickson’s film break down the other day. Dickson was pretty frustrated/disgusted. Said if Nuss is never gonna pull it and take just the 3 or 4 yards around the edge, no team will ever respect that play and everybody will just crash down on the RB. We are giving them an extra man in the box. Either pull it a few times or quit fricking running it, because it’s not going anywhere. He was pretty critical of Emory Jones and Mason Taylor too. They whiffed on some blocks themselves.
Also said there was a noticeable difference when CJ Daniels when out. We really really underestimate the value he brings to the entire offense. Also pointed out a play where Chris Hilton just being on the field makes us better. Which is what a lot of us who were excited about him being back were saying. It was the play where he ran a go down the sideline and did a little stutter halfway and then beat his guy in man. Nuss wound up under throwing it, Hilton slowed down, and mistimed his jump again. He may not have even needed to jump.
But he cleared that entire part of the field out, and Anderson faked an inside route and had the safety or nickel back on skates when he then cut it to the outside. He was wide open. If Nuss hits him 15 yards down the field, it’s a 40 yard gain, but it was a 1st and 10 and Hilton beat his guy and Nuss went for the home run. Understandable. But Hilton is going to be more valuable than just his mere production. His speed gets other guys open.
Last thing while I’m thinking about it. During the postgame, I think, Dickson mentioned Sampson a couple times being out there after Daniels went out and said his “blocking” was pathetic. Zero effort, didn’t even know wtf he was trying to do. Just in the way. He’s not it, and I don’t think has what it takes to ever be. Not shitting on him, just pointing out that we can’t count on him taking a big step next year. I doubt he’ll even be here. We’ve got to get a dude or 2 from the portal.

You can use that logic for almost every team in the NCAA. Almost no one wants to rely on their backup QB. Stupid logic.
Most teams don’t even have a Reed backup. He has legs that will get him through anything. How many teams have a burner as a backup?
Running for a first down when it’s wide open is a hell of a lot different from JD getting dropped by Turner. He was still in the pocket. Nussmeier could easily get dropped whether or not he runs.

The answer is to NOT throw it to the other team. It's that simple

Nuss has left a lot of first downs on the field by not running. Run and fricking slide when you have 20 damn yards in front of you. It’s frustrating. I love Nuss but damn

Inclined to agree, the light still hasn't went on for him.
He looks like a bust.

Exactly. Just once or twice a game keep it & slide prior to contact if we don't want him hurt or if he doesn't like to run. He HAS to do this at a minimum for the run game to be successful.

Scrambling for 4-6 yards is better than forcing a throw across your body or incomplete pass.
He doesn’t need to be JD5 running lol, no one can do that. But his resistance to run for a few yards is similar to JD5 not throwing deep in his first year. It’s there, take what the defense is giving you.

It's only in situations where there are 7-8 dropped in coverage and there is an obvious lane to pick up 5-6 instead of throwing a pick. If this is implemented and done successfully it will eventually open up the run and pass game.

At this point, we have to presume Nussmeier just doesn't WANT to run. Surely he sees the open space to run, and he must clearly see and hear the criticism of him not running. The few times he has run, you could tell that even he was excited and a bit surprised that he picked up yardage and even scored.
If he had any confidence whatsoever as a runner, I have to believe he would see the chances and run a bit more. Maybe they just need to put in a designed run off the read and force him to keep the ball a few times.
At this point, MAKING him keep the ball a few times a game may let him see that he actually can run when it's open. I don't see any alternative, because right now he apparently refuses to run on his own.

No he has the option to hand the ball off or pass
Posted on 10/30/24 at 12:31 pm to LSUDonMCO
Of course it is not the answer but their needs to be a threat. Keep the defense honest and that won’t happen if he doesn’t keep it a few times a game.
Posted on 10/30/24 at 12:35 pm to LSUDonMCO
If you run the play then the QB has the responsibility to run it when it permits. Otherwise, everytime you run the play it will fail.
Posted on 10/30/24 at 12:41 pm to LSUDonMCO
Well then we need to fully remove read option from the playbook cause they are crashing down with no thought of the QB keeping. We got no shot for success running that.
