Hopefully Myles Brennan comes back healthy next year with Max getting experience while backing up Myles. TJ Finley getting another year of much needed development and Nussmeier joining the team as the future starter in 2 or 3 years.
But Johnson has really impressed me as a true freshman. He poise is incredible for a true freshman. I’m not writing off TJ because he looks very promising but Max seems to be comfortable out there and doesn’t seem to be affected by the speed of this level like TJ seems to struggle with right now.
Max Johnson stats:
Only 1 start with about 8 Quarters total of playing time this season.

@Auburn *(Max enters game with 8:45 left in 3rd Quarter)
15/22 62.5% 172 1/0 136.5 rating

@ #5 Texas A&M *(Max enters game with 4:24 left in the 3rd quarter)
14/22 63.6% 113 1/0 121.8

Vs #1 Alabama *(Max didn’t come into the game until it was 3:32 left in the 3rd quarter.)
11/17 64.7% 110yds 0/0 119.1

@#6 Florida W *(Max played the entire game with his first start.)
21/36 239yds 58.3% 3/0 141.6 52 rushing yards

Season: Max has played about 8 Quarters in total and is 1-0 as a starter.

61/99 61.6% 634yds 5/0 132.1 74 rushing yards

I can’t remember a true freshman QB look this poised ever at LSU. I was too young to remember Tommy Hodson’s first year and I know he is the standard bearer. Herb Tyler is the closest since I’ve been old enough to follow LSU.
61/99 61.6% 634yds 5/0 132.1 74 rushing yards

People are going to want the Garrett Nussmeier kid to play.

Coach’s son. That’s why I couldn’t understand why O started Finley when he said it was a toss up. If it’s a toss up, go with the kid that grew up immersed in football.

We all know the QB cliche’s let’s see how he holds up after teams have film....but we do have a good one in Max and hopefully we survive signing day and get a core of players to stay and build towards another championship.

Poise, confidence, toughness. Ugly deep ball (mostly high thrown ducks), but he seems like a winner

Could’ve said the very same about Burrow. His deep balls were almost always under thrown. He had freak WRs to win the 50:50 balls though.

I definitely remember we said the same about Finley after SC... Poised, confident, etc.. Let's see how he does with Ole Miss. Win the game, and allow whatever happens happen. We are in good shape as far as QBs. If Nuss signs, Brennan healthy, and Max pushes TJ, or vice versa. Thats a good thing to have. So I believe O when he says they were close in practice. One has a better arm, the other has better mobility. Go with the one that fits E's system, the QB run. Max!

Hodson was a redshirt freshman iirc. But with that said Max looked really really good.

Y’all act like Finley sucked his first start.

Finley has shown flashes of his potential, which is why I assume O started him first. He just can do more things with his arm talent.

That doesn’t necessarily mean he is a better football player at the moment though.

Yeah Finley has looked good as well. It’s not like MJ is that far ahead of Finley if at all.

I’m not buying it. I don’t think he has the arm strength to be a NC contender.

I’m not a scout though.

UF and SCar are not anywhere near the same level. C’mon, man.

Every time a new QB comes from HS or up from sitting on the bench everyone freaks out about how amazing he is gonna be. Then they play 3-4 games and make newbie mistakes and everyone jumps ship. It’s happened with every QB since I started following with Jamarcus

The favorite player on every team is the 2nd team Qb!

I’m definitely not writing off Finley. Johnson benefited from coming in to games late while behind against teams who pulled starters. Those teams game planned for Finley with plenty of film to study.
Johnson had less film for opponents to study. Finley was thrown into the fire while Johnson was eased in slowly over a few games.

I think both will be good but Johnson’s poise with a depleted team on the road vs Florida was more impressive than Finley vs South Carolina.

But I wouldn’t be surprised if TJ was named the starter next year if Myles isn’t healthy or leaves for some reason. Both freshman show lots of promise.
Hopefully Johnson’s arm strength gets better. At his size, he should be able to get plenty of zip on the ball.

Not true. A&M had their starters in trying to pitch a shutout and gain favor with the selection committee.

I don't know who all was on the field at the time, but a 4th down pass in the end zone to Gilbert was broken up by Surtain for Alabama.
