There is a better chance that life began on Mars. That LSU squad was not gonna be denied.

It would have been an interesting game for sure. You would have had the nation's top scoring defense against one of the best offensive teams in the country. LSU's front was very dominating with Marcus Spears, Chad Lavalais and Marquise Hill, very good LB's and an elite secondary with Webster & Co.
USC had a very good defense with Cushing and the LB's who were elite as well. The USC offense was just coming into its own with Leinart, Bush and Lendale White. LSU had the freshman duo of Broussard and Vincent who at the time were playing lights out and Michael Clayton who was playing at another level.
I think it would have been a game for the ages. Too bad the BCS computers screwed up....if I remember correctly it all hinged on a game being played out in Hawaii on the night of the SECCG

there were never any recruiting issues brought up by the NCAA
University of Southern California athletics scandal
Probes by both USC and the NCAA found that football star Reggie Bush, the 2005 Heisman Trophy winner, and basketball star O. J. Mayo had effectively forfeited their amateur status (in Mayo's case, before he ever played a game for USC) by accepting gifts from agents.
Punishment[edit]
As a result of sanctions issued by both USC and the NCAA, the Trojan athletic program received some of the harshest penalties ever meted out to a Division 1 program. The football team was forced to vacate the final two wins of its 2004 national championship season, as well as all of its wins in 2005. It was also banned from bowl games in both 2010 and 2011 and was docked 30 scholarships over three years. The basketball team gave up all of its wins from the 2007-08 season and sat out postseason play in 2010. The NCAA accepted USC's earlier elimination of its wins between November 2006 and May 2009 and did not sanction the team further.[1]
Shortly after the NCAA handed out its penalties, the Football Writers Association of America announced it would no longer recognize the Trojans as its 2004 national champion.[5] In June 2011, the Bowl Championship Series stripped the Trojans of the 2004 BCS title (leaving Ohio State as the only non-Southern school with a BCS title), though the Associated Press still recognizes the Trojans as its national champions for 2004.
Bush is the first person in the Heisman Trophy's history to give his trophy back to the Heisman Trust, and the 2005 season is the only one in the award's history for which there is no winner.

Yeah...we played two common opponents that year - Auburn and Arizona - and we beat both of them by one more point than USC did.
Our D at the end of that season was phenomenal...one of the best I've ever seen. Most of the media thought LSU was lucky to beat a highly ranked UGA team the first time and predicted that we would lose to them big in the SEC Championship in Georgia. We blew them out the 2nd time. And we held "one of the greatest offenses ever" to just over 150 total yards for the national championship game.
USC was great too...but in that environment with that D, it would have been hard for any team to beat LSU.

What a surprise …The ESPN 30 for 30 Trojan War piece was totally misleading in using terms like “three-peat” and “dynasty” in referring to USC’s national championship runs in the BCS era (starting in 2003). Once I heard about this alleged 2003 championship, I was suspicious of everything else included in this piece.

Get over it. It was a split title, and of course they are going to claim it

The 30 for 30 mentioned nothing about a split title or LSU. They just said USC won the national championship

Nothing to get over with USC. Just disappointed with the shoddy presentation/reporting by ESPN.

Nope. Stripped
Can't take away what actually happened.
They were the most dominant team, or at least #2 In the bcs era
37-2 over the 3 seasons. 3 pac 10 championships, rose bowl victory, won bcs championship game, and lost 1 in one of the greatest games ever

I don't think that USC team even played a ranked opponent that year.
Beat #6 Auburn on the road and #6 Wazzu at home.
Auburn finished 8-5 and unranked. Washington State finished 10-3 and #9. Only two ranked teams in the Pac-10 - that league was bad for a long time.

What school wouldn't claim the AP title?

LSU won the title that year. It's in BR in a trophy case.
