Marcus Spears' daughter to vie for spot on US National volleyball team

This summer, Spears and three other Dallas-area standouts will be competing for spots on the USA team that will play in the FIVB Girls U19 World Championship in Croatia and Hungary. Spears, who will be a junior next season, was among the 19 players selected to train July 21-29 at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

The 6-foot-3 sophomore outside hitter led the Lions to a 40-1 record and a Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) state championship this past season. Spears amassed 544 kills and 225 digs to go with 50 aces and 65 blocks, posting a .477 hitting percentage and .602 kill percentage on the attack. A member of the under-19 U.S. National Team, she was named TAPPS Player of the Year, the Dallas Morning News Player of the Year, VolleyballMag Texas Player of the Year and a MaxPreps First-Team All-American.

Spears' wife was a terrific player for Sue Gunter and deserves plenty of credit in the gene pool area.

Was just coming to post this. That athletic union, plus that of Cedrick Harris/Marie Ferdinan, was destined to produce some serious athletes.
