The Celtics coach at that time was Red Auerbach who begged Pete to come back for one more year, but the Pistol was done.

Auerbach was GM.

Bill Fitch was the coach.

Imagine how much scarier he would have been had he been able to carry non-stop like players today can?

Based on his shot charts, it is estimated that he would have averaged 57 a game if the 3-point line was in play.

Yea and Bill Fitch hated Maravich. Red Auerbach loved Pete, but at the end of the day I think Pete had just become burned out. Especially after he blew out his knee and was a shell of his former self.

This version was purposely made to concentrate on his life away from court and his realstionship with his father. I thought it was excellent.

This. If you read a preview of it, it only talked about his personal background. Everybody has seen the highlights

Should’ve been more than just ONE HOUR OF COMMERCIAL TIME, Pistol Pete’s LSU career is too remarkable and prolific to be confined to only one hour...PERIOD

Do remember that, I thought it was a hook shot from near mid court at the end.

Does anyone remember a game at Georgia,

I know the exact one you're thinking of, and you left out the best part. Basically, he single handedly brought the team back from down 6 or so in regulation to take it to overtime.

When they get into overtime, he turns it up again, and absolutely takes over. With 2-3 minutes remaining (I think), he's got LSU up 8 and he freezes the ball (dribbles around, no shot clock).

In the last 20 seconds or so, UGA realizes they can't win and pull back. He dribbles the ball at the half court line and with a couple seconds left, shoots a hook shot from half court. As soon as he releases it, he turns his back to the basket and walks towards the locker room. BUCKET.

The UGA fans, who by mid-overtime began cheering for Pete, rush the court and carry him off on their shoulders. The opposing fans, carried him off on their shoulders.

The man was a legend.

This is based only on some unsubstantiated BS from Dale Brown. Pete averaged ~11 made free throws per game and ~17 made field goals. He would have to have scored around 46 points on the 17 shots from the field—that’s about 11 threes and 6 twos.

Is it really reasonable to say Maravich was making nearly twice as many threes as twos? Especially when there was no incentive to shoot the lower percentage long range jumper when he was playing?

These SEC stories are a load of crap. The Shaq and Dale one was pretty good, though.

Did they do the one on Archie Manning and sons? That one was really good.

Yeah, it was "The Book of Manning." I thought it was perhaps the best the SEC Storied series.

I basically agree with your take. But as much as we love Pete he was a complicated individual and it’s hard to capture everything he was in a one hour show. The SEC Network would do well to have a full feature on him. Pete Maravich is as an iconic athlete as any who has ever played in the SEC.

Press Maravich lived on Chevelle Drive and I lived a few streets over. We used to sit on our bikes on his sidewalk and watch Pete shoot in the driveway. I remember like it was yesterday and he would just shoot the shite with us like anyone else.

Many of you guys remember the Georgia game freeze but forget the going out of bounds game ending half court hook shot he sank to end the 2nd overtime and game. He landed on the bench and immediately put a towel over his head. Didn't even look at the damn ball go in.His regular season college career was now over. What a way to go out!
