Screw Hollywood's twist on any story. Read "Heir to a Dream", his autobiography. It's a great read. Actually about half of the book is his father's biography. It talks about how much influence his father had on modern basketball.

Did you know Maravich wanted to go to West Virginia, and had made a verbal commitment, but his father threatened him if he didn't come to LSU?

Maravich's biggest goal was to only be on a championship team, which he never was. He retired from the NBA during pre-season while playing for Boston. Boston ended up winning the title that year.

It really featured his sadness, which was legit and spanned most of his life.

CBS did one a few years back that was more about hoops?

I don't think you understand what a documentary is. If you want what you want and no interpretation and commentary, watch YouTube.

Besides, a big chunk of his career was not televised.

They missed the boat on the Warren Morris walkoff too. The cheesy modern footage of the player stepping into the box ruined it IMHO.

Imagine how much scarier he would have been had he been able to carry non-stop like players today can?

It was interesting that his sons talked about what a burden and heavy expectations his name put on them. Yet they covered their bodies in tattoos of pistols, No. 23, etc.

Mark Kriegel's Pistol is the definitive biography of Pete Maravich.

That is, unless you want a glossed over Rah-Rah! version of events, which it seems what some people posting in this thread prefer.

re: Maravich story very Underwhelming..
Does anyone remember a game at Georgia, during which in the last 2 minutes or so, Pete put on a dribbling exhibition to end all. From what I remember before he finished, 4 of the Georgia players were chasing him all around the court, while the rest of the LSU team just stood back by the top of the key and watched.

Now I have to admit that years may have blown this up in my mind much bigger than it actually was. In fact it might not have been a TV game, and maybe I was just listening to John Ferguson describe it. I am assuming I just didn't dream this up. :)

So if anyone remembers something like this let me hear back from you. Thanks in advance.

This version was purposely made to concentrate on his life away from court and his realstionship with his father. I thought it was excellent.

Don't remember a Georgia game specifically, (saw him play several times as a teenager) but no doubt remember in general, that with the lead at end-game, w/ no shot clock in those days, it was Pete's job to run out the clock.... it is definitely no exaggeration to say it frequently resembled the Washington Wizards chasing Curly Neal or some other Globetrotter.

As to "may have blown this up in my mind", I seem to remember, either seeing or hearing a story, of Pete ending one of these dribbling expos with sinking a hook-shot from near half-court corner as time expired, just showing off, and getting mad at a ref for waving it off as being after the buzzer...
I don't know if that actually happened or is legend - but it sure sounds plausible and like him.

re: Maravich story very Underwhelming..
The main thing that I learned from watching the show was that Pistols mom was a paranoid schitzo alcoholic and therefore Petes' dad had to take care of her and it had a negative effect on recruiting because he had to devote so much time to her. It was a big reason that Pistol always seemed down and out and often depressed and also lead to his alcoholism. It's amazing to me that they discovered his heart defect after he died. He should not have lived that long according to the doctors. RIP to the greatest!!!!

Showtime!

New Orleans Jazz vs. Cleveland Cavs

Pete dribbling, putting on a show to run out clock with Sustin Carr trying to steal the ball.

With clock running out, Pete suddenly stops and hands the ball to Austin Carr and walks off the court.

Plus touching someone now is a foul. Plus a 3 point line. Can you imagine how many free throws he'd shoot under today's rules?

The Celtics coach at that time was Red Auerbach who begged Pete to come back for one more year, but the Pistol was done.

What? Auerbach retired from coaching before Maravich even entered LSU.

Was the Maravich one really short like the Morris one too? I remember watching it and when it ended thinking... “that was it?” Cheesy footage, bad editing (using shots of a football crowd for a baseball doc wtf).

These SEC stories are a load of crap. The Shaq and Dale one was pretty good, though.
