She hates it. Gets overly aggressive and commits stupid fouls. After she got into early foul trouble in last year's championship game, she became an absolute liability on defense. Was literally letting LSU players go right past her.

If I'm Mulkey, I'm trying to replicate that strategy. Probably looks a bit different tactically this year, but strategically it is the same concept. Make her work. She'll either get into foul trouble or give up easy baskets.

I think Clark is going to get her ~30+ points regardless. But if you can turn her into a defensive liability again, she'll give up just as many.

She's not going to commit a lot of obvious fouls. And she absolutely won't get called for any borderline ones.

I agree with making her work defensively. I just don't think a foul trouble strategy is going to pan out.

Agreed. Making her work defensively is smart though to wear her out.

She did last year. LSU came out shooting hot from the perimeter, made Clark chase a little bit, and as a result she picked up three stupid fouls in the first half. After that, she was a complete liability. They tried to hide her in the triangle part of the triangle-and-two defense they were playing, but Mulkey recognized that and went right at her. Like I said, she was literally letting players drive past her.

Will that happen again? Maybe not. Maybe she eases up. But if she does, that should result in relatively easy buckets for LSU. Either way, I think you go right at her -- probably with Flau'jae slashing to the basket as part of an inside-out game.

Okay?

This isn't last year.

Different teams, but same opportunity cost structure. Clark is too important to sit the bench. That is a weakness that can be exploited.

In chess, the most powerful piece (Queen) is often forced to back down from challenges from much weaker pieces. Reason: she’s too important to lose.

Same is true w Clark.

One of my favorite plays last year Clark was guarding Jasmine Carson in the corner. Clark dropped her hands and backed off Carson allowing/daring her to shoot. It was string music, Tom!

I think the key might be to shut down Clark’s teammates to shift the entire burden on to Clark. She will get a lot of points but to win she will need help. Take out the help and our chances go up.

Make her work on defense. Stop her from driving and dishing. Limit her assists. She is gonna get her 30 just keep her assists in single digits and keep the others from scoring in double digits.

If I’m Iowa, I’m trying to hide Clark on the backside of the zone from the tip. Gotta find her and isolate her.

Run a box and 1.
Im never a fan of this against a really good team, but clark is ~50% of the teams offense and even higher percentage when you consider her assists/play making.

Face guard off ball, double team on perimeter. It gives us the best chance to win imo.

If you remember.. Last year... Carson hitting bombs.. She was being gaurded by CC... She has to gaurd somebody. Can we hit shots? I think we have an advantage in the post for sure..

Work it inside, if not there kick to Flau’jae on backside slash. Assuming Clark is hiding on the backside of zone, she will have to defend Flau’jae at the basket or give up easy buckets. Either way is a win for LSU.

Believe 2 of the 3 were offensive fouls

Defense is optional for Clark. I can guarantee you she WON'T GUARD Flau'jae. She will guard either HVL or Poa. Anybody else and it's a mismatch and advantage LSU.

You make a good point that making her work defensively may not lead her to getting into foul trouble. OTOH, even if it doesn't, making her work defensively will likely cause frustration (no one really wants to see the player they're guarding contribute to the game w/ points or assists) or fatigue. Frustration will take you out of your game offensively and fatigue is always the great equalizer. I'm confident Coach Mulkey and her staff have been working on a good plan to defend CC for many months.
