I'm not sure Riley believes he's as good as the media gives him credit for being. I think he wanted the easier path to the CFP and definitely didn't want to stay at OU and enter the SEC. Think about the knock on OU vs. SEC recently.

He should have tons of success at USC and will have them dominating their conference. He's more than likely still going to struggle in the CFP with strong SEC teams but at least his talent will be much upgraded.

I think he's good, just not great as the media credits him. No excuses now, USC will make or break his career. BK also has no excuses and LSU will give him much upgraded talent to prove just how good he is.

History didn't start in 1994 and ended in 2011 for ND my friend. ND has nationwide following for decades..

High school seniors for the class of 2021 were born in 2003. They don't give a damn what Notre Dame did prior to 1994. Most kids today have no loyalty or allegiance to a program because of what they accomplished 20+ years ago. Hell that is even evidenced by programs like Tennessee, Nebraska, and USC. Notre Dame is a great program that has had solid teams in the last 20 years, but let's face it, they can't recruit as many elite athletes as an SEC powerhouse because of their academic requirements and geographical location. CBK knows this and that is why he made the move.

Riley is betting on a few things:

USC will have an easier path to the CFB than OU
NIL will give USC a massive recruiting advantage over OU
NIL will allow USC to pillage the portal
ESPN will promote USC nationally
ESPN will never criticize him as long as the program in somewhat successful.

This was a very shrewd move by Riley, but I dont think he can pull it off.

I’m amused reading/hearing all this garbage regarding BK making a ‘lateral move’ from ND to LSU. Remind me how many National Championships has ND won in the 2000’s. This is far from a ‘lateral move’. It’s a significant step up for him, and will give him an opportunity to prove his true value against SEC competition, instead of floundering at ND.

To me, this is the biggest takeaway from the hire. LSU would not have been able to take a HC from Notre Dame 20 or 30 years ago.

I listened to the Hold that Podcast Podcast yesterday, and they had a ND podcaster on. Here's what I heard.... A bunch of grown ups going through the stages of grief. They are past the denial stage.....no way this just happened. Now they've dug in and are fully angry. The guy sounded like he had legit dual personalities. He would spout facts about how Kelly grew the program from zero relevance, and then literally change his tone of voice and speak on the lack of personal relationships he has and how he doesn't go out and recruit.

I'm not saying they don't have the right to be pissed. They are in the mix for the playoffs and their head coach just bolted. The players will rally around the assistants and Marcus Freeman to play with a chip on their shoulder. We've seen the ND playoff picture happen, and this year isn't going to change....if they even get in.

Notre Dame is untouchable to the media. They are the Gold Standard of college football. LSU coming in poaching thier coach is a scenario that none of these people thought would ever happen. Its unthinkable.

Like Colin Cowherd said, "Nobody gives a shite about the Gipper and Knute Rockne anymore".
