No, im mainly referring to tall and lengthy middle infielders.

DJ LeMahieu 6'4" SS/2B
Jacoby Jones 6'3" SS/2B

The only player you listed that is close to fitting that mold is Zach Arnold.

but nice try!

Like we keep saying those guys usually don't end up on college rosters. Why do you keep bringing that up?

He has read the Rant enough to believe that conventional wisdom, Rant version, is that Mainieri only recruits 5'8" 150 lbs position players and he wanted to repeat that myth to prove how much he knows about the baseball team.

Instead he got p'wned with facts so he's had to crawfish and change his story, which only makes him look dumber than his original dumb post did.

When someone has a specific agenda and they start a thread in order to push said agenda, information like you pointed out above is normally intentionally left out of the conversation.

I started the thread and I didn't have an agenda. Go back and check my posting history about Mainieri. I have repeatedly called out others who have called for his head and have stated that he is hell of a coach.

LSURussian provided a lot of clarity that it's basically SOP for the assistants to do the evaluations. So, someone with knowledge politely responded to my post to address the article.

Just because someone raises a concern, questions something doesn't make them a hater.

You get your panties in a wad way too much. Who the frick appointed you as defender of the faith regarding LSU sports?

Do realize how rare a guy like DJ is at 2nd base? And Jacoby never played a single game at SS at LSU, not sure why you've included that in your description of him. He played SS in high school. He's played in the OF his entire career in the professional ranks, and he was a pretty average 2B for LSU and a very inconsistent player all around.

I'd love more players with Jones' natural athletic ability, which is off the charts, but very little of that ability was realized until he was long gone from Baton Rouge. All we got were flashes. About a .280 career hitter with 12 home runs in 3 years. I'd much rather have a "midget" in a guy like Cole Freeman than a college version of Jacoby Jones.

And as far as SS, until Hal Hughes was forced to play when Smith got hurt in 2018, I'm not sure you'd find a more impressive run of elite college SS than we had at LSU from 2009-2017, which resumed again last year when Smith started at SS in 65 of the 66 games we played.

But if You say you like tall, lanky middle infielders, well you'll get your wish with Doughty and Arnold

Austin Nola, Kramer Robertson and Alex Bregman are all 6 foot. Height doesn't always mean better. What if Mainieri was so dead set on height like you are and missed out on these guys because of it and ended up with a lesser player?

Except first base and pitcher, height is of little consequence in baseball.

which isn't better exemplified by looking at two of arguably the best second basemen currently in major league baseball, Jose Altuve and DJ Lemahieu. Altuve is 5'6" 165, while DJ is 6'4" 215.

I didn't even mention Josh Smith. He's 5'10" and I think it's safe to say he's a pretty good player.

re: Mainieri recruiting
quote:

Two seasons ago Nolan Cain and Adam Dunn gave about a 30 minute presentation to the Coaches Committee on our recruiting process. It was detailed about how we go about first getting our "leads" on recruits which often occurs when the player is just entering his freshman or sophomore year in high school and how we fill draft/injury created holes in our incoming roster from junior college recruits.

The list of junior colleges head coaches that Cain has contact with is long and impressive.

Cain keeps a four-year matrix of our projected needs based on draft prospects and graduation of our current roster with prospects names filled in as possible replacements. Each prospect is rated on a range of skills and signability.

The big unknown is always the draft and injuries. The best formulated plans can become useless quickly when those two events get in the way.

It's always a balance between (1) recruiting the best players to fill our upcoming roster holes and (2) recruiting the best players who we feel confident will not sign with the pros.

But it's not as if Cain attends a few high school games and then offers the first players he sees and Mainieri doesn't know what's going on with recruiting.

this is all 100% on the money...

And then proceeded to post just enough of the information from the article to have the cave dwellers bashing the coach. Great job of not having an agenda.

Sometimes the way they do it - like omitting very valuable parts of an article - does make them a hater. And I'm not saying you are and I have no clue. But I saw some people attacking based on pitiful information that was provided to them.

You get your panties in a wad way too much.

Did I seem mad or upset to you? Maybe it's my avatar or signature pictures, I don't feel agitated, upset or even tardy for that matter.

Dude, I just read your post, saw the bashing and then eventually someone (probably the ONLY one who was willing to click on an Advocate link to read their article) posts the other half of the truth that was suspiciously omitted in the OP.

Not attacking nor defending here. Just pointing out what I see. The posts attacking the coach pretty much ended with the post that explained the reason for the coach's statement.

Jesus you're so fricking obtuse. The rest of the article had nothing to do with the point of my post. There is nothing suspicious about omitting the rest of its content. It's okay.
You've offered nothing to the conversation of substance, just an incessant whine. Others have shed light on the role of the head coach vs assistants in evaluation and recruiting of prospects.
Here's hoping the Tigers have a great year and make it back to Omaha.

Don't get why you were saying my panties were in a wad and now that I am whining.

I also don't know why what I am saying bothers you so much unless it is true.

Hell, the post that has you so upset wasn't even responding to you but to the person pointing out the omission from the OP that got the melt and attacks going. Talk to him.

I don't know how the summer camps work but is that not a tool to evaluate talent first hand for Mainieri?
